This is a little off the beaten path from my usual AR posts but I'm in the mood for some art today. I finished this video in late 2015 and thought, hey, it's Friday... why not share it... If you have a few minutes this evening or over the weekend, I hope you'll watch it and enjoy...
One of the best songwriters I have ever known personally is Tony Williams. I had the privilege of working with him from @ 1967/68 - 1972/73... We collaborated on numerous projects during that time and among my favorites are the songs he wrote that I was involved with and got to arrange and record. Like an old favorite album from my youth, I’ve enjoyed listening to them for over 45 years and they stand the test of time.
Our original connection was we both worked with Bonnie Guitar and diligently spent our 10,000 hours to be experts at creating music at her ranch in Orting. Later in 1970 we’d form an impromptu collaborative and meet in Sumner at Gary Baller’s home. We were song writers and helped each other to create and produce demo recordings to pitch our material to the music publishing houses hoping for that big break.
I resurrected many of these old recordings a few years ago from old reel to reel. Bless modern technology! I got them digitized to my laptop and after months of clean up and post production remixing I got the audio as good as one can. They sat around for a few more years until one night, on my way back from Sumner after work I was inspired to shoot some video and thought about putting it to “Knowing You’re Mine” as I drove up the same valley I did way back then to Renton.
At Gary’s home Tony Williams, Gary Baller, Dan Nordblad and I got together on many a Friday evening after work and often there was a Saturday follow up session.
Tony’s song, “Knowing You’re Mine”, is one of my favorites. His lyrics just slay me in this very poignant song about being alone and lost, disconnected from his love, and trying to get back home where he knows he belongs. It’s so totally 1970 but it still resonates with me.
I arranged it and played 4 guitar parts and bass. Gary Baller plays electric guitar and does background vocals, Dan Nordblad on drums, and Tony sings. This recording is close to my heart, so maybe I hear things in it that aren’t really there. It isn’t the definitive master recording to be sold to the public, it's the home studio version as a demo. Yet now, upon reflection, it is the real version. It stands perfectly as is, even with all of its imperfections. Like Picasso said, art is the lie that helps us see the truth.
It's best viewed and listened to with headphones, or via your computer that's hooked up to your stereo. Anyway, Happy Friday! Enjoy!
