The innate evilness of recipes on ActiveRain

I was surprised that recipes rated as high as they did in a poll about what should be outlawed on ActiveRain.

ActiveRain ought to have a law against posting....

Recipes now have 27 votes or 19.15% of the vote in the very unscientific poll.

Now before any doofus starts whining, ranting or screaming about censorship, I personally have no problem with recipes on ActiveRain. I don't believe I have ever posted one but here goes....

From HER Realtors Cookbook Number .... No I can't do it. I have a degree in Home Economics (no cooking or sewing involved) and worry about being pigeonholed. Do I care if others post recipes on real estate blogs? In email newsletters? send out recipe cards?

I wrote about the history of cookbooks in ColumbusBestBlog.com the company I work for now known as Real Living HER used to be known as HER Realtors. HER Realtors (it's not Her Realtors, it is a man's initials, the founder's, Harley E. Rouda.) In a nutshell HER was founded in 1956. the company published a number of cookbooks over the years.

Here's the first edition HER Cookbook for sale on Amazon.com

On the " ActiveRain ought to have a law against posting" poll Lane Bailey commented that he voted for a law against recipes on ActiveRain:

"because of the stereotype of agents sending out recipe post cards."

The McCain presidential campaign just had Recipegate.

"Ooops, Cindy McCain's recipe for recipe plagiarism" on an LA Times blog says :

"It was a really popular feature. So the McCain folks are gonna put up new Cindy McCain favorite recipe pages. As soon as the oven reaches 450 degrees."

Sue Ann Niven, the Happy Homemaker was just a TV character...and "the Happy Homemaker was from the 1970's and times change I don't know there is something unsavory about calling the "Happy Homemakers" of ActiveRain "point whores." Monika McGillicuddy mentioned "point whores" on the post about what should be "outlawed" on ActiveRain, not in relation to Happy Homemakers or recipes. Just what "point whores" are in general. Could you "point whore" with recipes. You could, IMHO. Is there something intrinsically icky about recipes. Or is it that no one should just because you wouldn't?

There are recipe groups on ActiveRain and regional groups on ActiveRain which welcome recipes including:

be careful... I was hankering for some ribs after visiting Jimmy's "Suthurn Thangs" group...

another poll a couple of doofuses I mean respected ActiveRain members commented on my post last Sunday said there ought to be a law against polls on ActiveRain.

Ha Ha...

MM,

What a great idea. Someone should have bought this to light ages ago!

Good For you!

Personally, I use recipe sites to find recipes.  And I use real estate sites to find real estate.  I know that is strange of me.  But if y'all wanna blog about recipes then go for it.

Maureen,  This is almost too funny!  I posted a few recipes back in November and to this day, I consistently get at least one hit, if not more, daily for this recipe.  Glad I posted it.  I also post recipes on my newsletter which went out last week and got two calls thanking me for them.  I'm not going to stop something that obviously works.

05/04/2008 08:34 AM by Marc Grossman, GRI - Central Florida Real Estate Specialist (Keller Williams Premier Realty)

To each his own I say. I read it all. Sometimes recipes are better than "why do open houses" time after time after time.

Huh? re: Scott's comment  Not bringing anything to light... asking people what their opinion is.  Not that anyone's opinions about what others are doing on ActiveRain or elsewhere in r.e. blogging matters much.

Some recipe blogging could be great blogging while others might not be...

Thanks guys for the comments.

Thanks guys and Laura .... (and MF missed her comment too)

Hi Maureen.  Recipes?  Fine by me.  Most of my posts should be blacklisted from active rain.

Ken now I have to go look at your blog...

Should the McCain campaign not have posted recipes on their site because people look for recipes on recipe sits and they are there (presidential election site ) for something else? The LA times post is about recipes but also about what else journalists, readers, etc. want to know about the candidate.   I am not sure if the LA Times blog really has any info about the popularity of recipes on McCain's site or if they are going to put up legit favorote recipes or if the ""It was a really popular feature. So the McCain folks are gonna put up new Cindy McCain favorite recipe pages. As soon as the oven reaches 450 degrees." is just poetic license, too clever to resist??

05/04/2008 08:51 AM by Maureen McCabe - Central Ohio real estate (Real Living HER)

I have yet to see a recipe here on AR.  I do not go looking for them and have never seen one on the blog roll.  If I were to see a recipe, though,  I'd check it out to see if might be something I'd like.

I hate these polls.  IT did not register my Other vote...  and will not let me vote again.

Thanks for the comments.  Scott opposed to recipes on other RT blogs?

RT AR does want more RE content according to Rich J' post about balance.  Less "other"

LOL...You could point whore everthing I'm sure.

Personaly when I want to find a recipe....I'll Google it and I would not expect Active Rain to show up. But then maybe it would...

Stop by next week Monika.. Sunday I am thinking of a poll... something like "I am a point whore with:"

recipes

jokes

rants

Maureen,

Thanks for informing the community of this outrageous back door attempt at censorship!  The idea that some folks would use your poll to try to put down or censor the publishing of recipes....well, it just ain't right.

Recipes are, quite frankly, one of the most popular genres in the book-selling business (check your local Barnes and Noble), and they obviously grab the attention of large hordes of people.  That's why local fire departments, churches, schools, country clubs, Moose clubs, hunting clubs, sewing clubs, and, yes, even RE brokerages, among many others, seem to always "put out" a recipe book at some point in their existence.  They do it for a simple reason: they wish to attract the attention of as many folks as possible, and a recipe book is a proved method to do just that.  Perhaps that is the inherently evil part...bringing people into one's web with food for ulterior motives.

I mozied over there to your poll, Maureen, and I voted to eliminate cut-and-paste...now, Lord knows there are oodles and oodles of cut-and-paste "point whores" on AR.  Maybe AR could have an option, when posting on one's blog, of owning up...that is, a "reprinted by permission of the author" button.  That way, at least cut-and-pasters won't have to lie.  We could even have another option: "paraphrased from previously published material."

Now, back to this recipe thing....when I started "Suthurn Thangs," I was hopeful that others would contribute more interesting things like character sketches of unique and interesting people, "precious memories," jokes with a Southern twist, hunting stories, fishing stories, RE & HI stories unique to the South, pictures of Grandma's home stitched quilts, Southern artwork, book reviews....well, you get the drift.  I even begged on several occasions for more of the above types of content, only to be bombarded with...you guessed it...RECIPES.  So, I gave up and started including a few of my own recipes.  This proves one thing:  that, at least in the South, food (and by logical conclusion the various and sundry ways of preparing it) is a mighty popular subject.

Great food for thought -- thanks Maureen! LOL! Do you mean to tell me that my recipie/how-to for a Guitar Hero Birthday Cake is too Suzie Q for the AR community? hahaha -- I think there should be a rule that if you post a recipie, you need to post the actual dish on your table... otherwise, it could really be plagerism...hmmm? Hungry now -- gotta run.

I vote that we allow recipes only if they are low fat and they are no more than 250 calories:)

Maureen-I don't see anything wrong with recipes if that is what people are looking for , heck my wife is a reciope junkie and I'm gald..alot of great meals. Just my thought! :-)

Interesting idea. Qassia allows you to repost stuff that you have previously posted elsewhere and gives less money (points)  for that than something that is original, never published before and there is a third category but I can not really remember what that is.  ?? Maybe reprinted with permission?

I Twittered an invite to Qassia and did one on AR and Bob Stuart joined Qassia.  His initial observation was that there was plagiarized content there, or recycled content and he did not see a flagging mechanism.

I think recipes are very popular with some people and that is why you see them on presidental candiates websites, real estate newsletters, health care newsletters, community newsletters, etc.

I love your vision of Suthern Thangs Jimmy.  It still could come true.  AR is young.  I get frustrated with  groups that I founded...

I am going to have to look for the Guitar Hero Birthday cake... Juliana There really ought to be illustrations with recipes.  Of course food photography is different, or so they always said.  Although some of the local bloggers in my market whip out their cameras and the photos look mouth wateringly wonderful. I am so bad at photography that I am not about to try photographing food.

Terry I think the recipe critics on AR just need to find something else to read.  People may not come to AR to read recipes but someone who's searching the web for home inspection in MS may remember Jimmy because of his personality.... his personality includes sharing recipes.

Neal - I want high fiber, low sodium recipes too....

Not sure why I would care - my reason for being here is social networking and building my business with posts on localism.... so... what others choose to post means nothing to me unless I find it interesting and comment - I'd like to know where these people find time to start and keep the arguments going

If people don't want to read recipes then go to a post or group on something that does interest them...pretty simple don't you think :-)

Here's a recipe you'll enjoy called a "Water Shooter", Maureen:

Fill one shot glass with water.

Drink quickly.

I feel better already. and there's never a hangover.

Have one on me. :-)

You should be able to have it both ways...allowing recipes to be posted so then why can't you post a poll? Same thing just different content. Does that mean you can't post someone else's stolen you tube?

05/06/2008 07:11 AM by Neal Bloom-Realtor ® Assoc.-CRS-Weston FL (RE/MAX Premier Associates)

Jim I'm surrprised it took so long for someone to come up with one of "those" recipes.   I think there is one sorta like that from H.E.R. Sr. in one of the HER Realtors cookbooks, inside the cover?  Back cover?

He attended one of our office sales meetings recently with a very back to basics message.

Recipes, cookbooks, food are all about connecting to people.

"someone else's stolen you tube?"

Wondering what's a stolen YouTube?

05/06/2008 07:24 AM by Maureen McCabe - Central Ohio real estate (Real Living HER)

I think if people want to get points they will find a way whether there are recipe groups or not. I like to join groups that interest me. If I decide to refer a client I will use a Realtor that I have gotten to know though a group and that feel good about. Even if a group is about pets, treasure hunting, or recipes it still allows me to meet someone that will be a good match for my client. That makes the group worth while. In the meantime I enjoy connecting with people that have the same interests as I have.

What's ironic and interesting about this whole little thread is that one can rack one's brains for a subject that would evoke lots of interest and discussion, and probably the last thing I would have thought of would have anything to do with recipes, let alone evil ones.

Maureen, obviously, you are a genius.

LOL it's funny how people get peeved over these blogs!

I don't like recipe posts simply because I think they're not relevant.  So I just don't read them.  I suppose I'd be peeved though if I were constantly upstaged in my local area by someone posting nothing but cut and paste jokes, email forwards, and recipes, while I'm struggling each week to come up with something engaging, interesting, and relevant to real estate in my area...

But as I said before - it's not my job to worry about what someone else is doing; it's my job to worry about what I'm doing....and customers clicking on a recipe poster's blog will either like what they see and hooray, that recipe person has a new fan, or they'll back out and look for an agent posting what they're looking for.

I wonder how many customers actually do look in the "Line UP" pages to see who's at the top - somehow, I think they just find us through Google searches, or by word of mouth, rather than by choosing someone from the main page for that state.

I've never posted one, although to my husband's embarrassment I do take pictures of my food at local restaurants.  Wasn't there a chocolate chip cookie recipe contest during the last presidential election?  Y'all've (there's a Suthern word for you) made me hungry, now I'm going to check out some recipes.

05/07/2008 10:09 PM by Michelle DeRepentigny, *Real Estate Broker * Athens, GA (Success Realty)

Michelle, step on over to "Suthurn Thangs", and you'll find plenty of recipes.  While you're there, and since you're Suthurn, how about posting a sketch with a Southern twist, something from your own uniquely Southern experience.  Oh!  And a recipe for Gar Balls!

05/07/2008 10:54 PM by Jimmy Breazeale (Sherlock Home Inspections)

I get so much traffic from food on my Discover Columbus blog... the traffic is for restaurants not recipes. I think people are attracted to food.

Tnanks all for the discussion.  There must be someone, somewhere on AR posting recipes constantly for there to be such a backlash that recipes were number one in voting

05/08/2008 04:24 AM by Maureen McCabe - Central Ohio real estate (Real Living HER)

Hmmm.  Wonder if I can take some of my recipes - not copy and paste but just things I've made up myself - and rename them with keyword names, and post them on my blog....like

Wallenpaupack Turtle Soup (it's ravioli soup, called it "turtle" soup and used round mini ravioli's, to get my kids to eat it when they were little)

Northeast PA Taco-Roni & Cheese (a big hit...maybe that should be Lakefront TacoRoni and Cheese)

Pike Burgers...Wayne County Lasagne...

Hey, maybe I'm on a (soft kaiser) roll here...

Or maybe I'm sleep deprived...

You are funny Karen... I have a poll on Discover Columbus now... I just put it up.  I should have dedicated it to Jimmy Breazeale... and his "Suthern Thangs group."   It is about iced tea.... I am drinking some right now... (poured it two days ago and it's been a long time getting done with it. it's been refrigerated most of the time...)

Maureen -I voted, but what is the recipe for a successful Momentum?   I think it includes having a beer with you and talking Teflon (what sticks in todays marketing kitchen?)  :) Hope to see you there!

05/08/2008 07:43 AM by Chris Drayer (FloorPlanOnline)

Hey, Karen!  I think you just may have hit the proverbial nail on the head!

Soon to come on Suthurn Thangs:

Inspector burgers

Home fries

Tudor style eggs on a toasted Shingle

You Realtor guys will have to come up with your own recipes.

05/09/2008 12:42 AM by Jimmy Breazeale (Sherlock Home Inspections)

Chris good to see you at Momentum.

Jimmy you are on my Discover Columbus blog today...  http://realtowns.com/maureen/blog  I think....

I am a firm believer in freedom of choice.

If I don't want to read the recipes, then I don't.  If I don't want to participate in a poll, then I don't.

Have we, generally, become so self-absorbed and stodgy that we think there is nothing else to discuss in this world other than Real Estate?

God help us all.

thanks Carole!

It seems most that voted just get hungry... I would guess most those who believe recipes are evil are ignoring me and my polls...
