Unusual Finds During a Home Inspection

Jay poses for a shot next to this deer head, shoved into this under stair storage closet. No day in real estate is ever the same.  That is one of the reasons I love this job.  I get to do different things every day. Working with a large variety of people and getting to see a lot of different home styles and decorating trends make each day interesting.  And sometimes there are moments that deserve to be documented.

Jay Markanich is the top of my list of recommended home inspectors in the Bristow area.  At this home inspection, we opened a closet to find a deer head.  Of course, Jay couldn't resist a posed picture.

Just another day in real estate...working past the deer head to get a closer look at electrical issues.

The candid shot came about a minute after Jay announced that he would be lucky if he didn't impale himself on the deer head getting into the closet for a closer look at electrical issues.  The wanna-be comedian in me sees the deer trying to get the attention of the guys and ask, "Hey guys, I think you should take a look at this over here."

While the deer head in the closet may be a bit off putting at first, the light fixtures in the master bathroom were eye catching in a very pleasing way.  Hollywood light fixtures, as I call them, are easily one of the first items I would recommend be updated in a bathroom.  This homeowner updated them with what appears to be a chicken wire cage.  I thought it was a really neat look.   What do you think?

Fun post! I think the light fixture looks cool as well, but not yet convinced unique fixtures like that are always the best when trying to sell a home. But, always depends on the buyer and what they want!

Cheaper than replacing the eighties light fixture though, right Cody Carmen ?

Chris Ann,

I love this post.  Richard Weeks has a whole series of these on his Q&A questions and these would fit right on.  I wonder where they got the idea to use mesh on those lights!  LOL A

They missed a calling. They could have also hung beads from the bottom to glam it up. LOL.

Oh man.  That deer thing could have been ugly.  I know that light fixtures can be purchased at the local hardware store for under $100.  Might be time to think about a little update.

It was definitely something that made me jump the first time I saw it,  Used to seeing deer heads displayed on walls, not hiding in closets.

Often seen, but seldom impaled on, deer heads are very common in Virginia!

As to the light fixture, seems someone visited the local prison yard sale.

Jay Markanich --I like them better on walls.

Myrl Jeffcoat --He is very thorough, but keeps the overall vibe of the inspection light, which is helfpul to keep things in perspective.

Hi Chris Ann Cleland -- having the right property inspectors available makes a big difference and to know someone who also can add a bit of levity to the situation doesn't hurt.

If a buyer works well with me, they usually work well with Jay.  I believe that my sense of humor is one of my most valuable tools.

The light is cool IF it fit the rest of the decor.  the should hang the deer at lest out in the garage.  To me is shows lack of pride laying under the steps with other junk

William Feela --I picture the listing agent directing them to take it down and then thrown in the closet.
