Blogging is a COMPLETE Waste of Time

My fave blogging coffee mugThey say a catchy title is important for grabbing attention and improving readership. So, I guess that caught YOUR attention. You clicked and you’re here, right?

The content is supposed to have something to do with the title. We’ll see if that really is the case, or if I am banking only on the title to carry me through.

Do I really believe that blogging is a complete waste of time? Well, looking at the points I have, one would either assume I don’t, OR that I really love wasting time (a.k.a. procrastinating). Truth is, there are those moments when writing a short post does keep me from doing some other unpleasant task, under the guise of convincing myself that I need to write another article for consumers or to snare some attention from the search engines. And since business does result from my writing, doing so is justification enough for me. So there!

My hit blog showI re-read an article I wrote some time ago called 10 reasons why I hate blogging. It WAS a bit tongue in cheek, admittedly, and there were lots of comments from folks who felt similarly…but there was some truth to what I said. In re-reading it, I realized that some things have changed, and some have not.

  • I have moved on, in some ways, to a higher level of thinking (ooooommmm)…and much more business directly from my AR blog as well as from my outside blogs
  • The coffee still gets cold, and it’s still annoying. Some patterns of behavior never change without therapy
  • I have not dealt well with the guilt that comes from not writing as much because I am too busy with all the business I am getting from posting. So I live with the guilt…therapy-less
  • The post-its are still in abundance and my blogging folder overfloweth. So be it. If it was empty I would have more to feel guilty about
  • I am still polite (usually) about commenting, and thanking folks when I need to. It HAS gotten more difficult with all that seems to happen here as we have grown. I have gotten less tolerant of bad behavior, plagiarism, flaming, and other nonsense, but now time constraints allow me to simply ignore it. Then I don’t have to worry about being polite. Good thing is we have continuing reminders from Rich Jacobson, Lenn Harley and others about these issues. Too bad some folks ignore them
  • Lust has become a thing of the past, or at least I have convinced myself that is true. Or maybe it’s business and SEO that I am now lusting after. Whatever…

Now that I have completely strayed off topic, what about that catchy title?

Don't believe itI have actually heard the comment or insinuation, on more than one occasion, that blogging is a complete waste of time. I used to get highly incensed when I heard this. Now I feel pity. Naysayers either don’t understand it, have so much business they don’t need it, or possibly just like putting down something that works for so many. I don’t try to convince them otherwise – it’s less competition, and I don’t have the time. They are entitled to their feelings.

For those of you who are starting out with blogging, or thinking about it,

I have this to say (finally he gets to the point, you say!).

Blogging is a lot of fun, and it’s a lot of work. You will feel frustrated at times, and the nagging feeling that blogging is a complete waste of time may creep into consciousness. Don’t let it take over, unless you truly believe it. If so, then stop wasting your time. And your readers’. They will know you are not committed. There are many here to support you on your blogging journey, so don’t hide or be shy.

You will learn a lot by blogging – about the communities you service, the buying and selling process, how to effectively market on-line and use technology (just reading all that is here on AR is better than any course you can possibly take – MIXPO for videos, RealEstateShows and Slide for virtual tours, vFlyer, tips and advice from successful agent bloggers from all over, the list goes on and on), consumer behavior, AND about yourself. You’ll find your voice, you’ll become more confident, and you’ll be proud of who you are and what you do. Don’t let anyone take that away from you. And consumers will benefit from what you have to say.

You WILL get business. I get calls and emails DAILY now. So do others. I can’t tell you how many folks here are seeing tremendous success from their writing. Just do some reading – you’ll figure it out.

You will have more ammo for those nagging calls from folks promising to get you on page one of Google or Yahoo. Hah - already there, bozo. Na Na Na Na Na!

So, blogging is a complete waste of time? Well, as my friend TLW would say…THAT'S A LOT OF CRAP!!!!.

Jeff, Not only is a big waste of time but here I am at 2:00 in the afternoon BLOGGING!!!. Of course I should be working BUT this is work. Or at least I have convinced myself of that. Maybe that's because folks keep contacting me and telling me they have just read my blog and would like to work with me. Go figure. What a bunch of crap!!!

Hi Jeff - I just laugh all the way to the bank at the folks who think blogging is a waste of time. It's their loss...

Besides the business, there are some wonderful people here in blogdom..you're one of the best!

Kelly - doesn't that drive you nuts? No matter how much I try to focus....

Hi Jeff,

"Blogging is a lot of fun, and it's a lot of work" I feel the same way about it myself.

The past few weeks it's been a time issue for me (and I know lot's of others) and blogging has been on the back burner. That's when I miss the fun side of it. As for the "ammo" that can be fun too when you tell them, "just do the search" and see how you're already on page one, ha, that's really fun.

Well, blogging is everything all rolled into one...  most importantly...the people I have met along the way....that are real....and nice...and funny....and a joy in person as well as online.... HUG!

Jeff, for those that just cut and paste or steal someone else's ideas, for them it is a complete waste of time.  But for those that provide great content like you, it is not only a great use of time, but also a valuable service to those of us who read it.

05/01/2008 09:19 PM by George Souto (McCue Mortgage Co.)

Lynda - clearly we are thinking alike. I love being able to let the telemarketers know where I am positioned and for free.  And, yes, timing HAS really become an issue. Much longer days and less sleep. :)

You are so sweet, Sally. Blogging, and all that comes with it is, in so many ways, a blessing.

George - and for those who end up reading cut and paste, it is a waste for them as well. Thank you for the compliment. I always find your words to have great value as well. :)

Jeff, you're a very good writer.  I can tell you enjoy it.  I've got another blog going, as well, for our clients.  Do you post the exact content on your other blogs, i.e., copy and paste, or do each of your blogs have fresh content?  Just wondering.

Beginning blogger, Debbie

Thanks, Debbie. I do not cut and paste, but I have written some similar content, and I link from blog to blog when there are relevant posts on one that I want to refer to from another.

Jeff, your talent as a great writer is very obvious here in AR.  I wish I had more time to write, instead of spending an hour every other day catching up on posts.  Thanks for always keeping your posts fresh and full of information.

Thanks, Kay. Such high praise - I'm not sure I'm worthy, but it's appreciated nonetheless. I have foudn it very difficult in recent months to keep up...and some weeks I cannot.

Jeff, The title did catch my attention! I agree that blogging is NOT a waste of time and it is a great way to generate business!

05/03/2008 12:15 AM by Roberta LaRocca - REALTORĀ® Las Vegas (Keller Williams Realty The Marketplace)

Jeff, I am suffering from the same guilt...if you find a good shrink let me know.  The busier I get selling real estate the harder it is to write good, well researched or thoughtful posts.  I actually skip days on AR which is unheard of for me!  I will never give up blogging and am working hard to get my outside blog to stay on Page 1 (it is on the top of page 2 today:( but some days I too look at my huge stack of ideas for posts and feel guilty!  I don't know how you do it so well.  Every time I read one of your Localism posts I am so impressed...you seem to be able to do it all!

Nice blog - and I did just have to microwave my coffee - LOL. I am pretty new and still learning from folks like you.  I am glad you are here to help me on my way. :)

05/03/2008 04:08 PM by April Hayden-Munson Realtor, Southeastern Wisconsin (RE/MAX Realty 100)

JEFF - I've been to both ends of the spectrum.  When I started out here, I was a blogging machine, pumping out 10 posts per week, EVERY WEEK!  I also made sure to comment at least 10 times each day, but usually more.  Many of my posts were about real estate, but more were not.  I built some great friendships and had a lot of fun.  When times were slower, it was better to do this and keep my mind sharp than give in to the frustration of a slower market.

However, as things picked up, and as I learned that SEO trumps catchy titles, I had to pare down my blogging.  The first thing to go was the need to post 10 times each week and comment 10 times each day.  I realized that the points were a competitive tool, but nothing that translated directly into business.  I wanted to gain subscribers at a regular clip, but then I realized that subscribers don't necessarily translate into business either.  While there may be some opportunities for referrals, the reality is that the majority of my subscribers are not going to have any business to refer to me.

I used to respond to each comment with a personal response, and the responses were usually fairly lengthy.  I loved the interaction, but found keeping up with every comment to be a full time job, so I decided that I will do my best, but not force myself to keep up the breakneck pace that I was keeping up for months.

I still enjoy writing about the rest of my life outside of real estate, and will do so from time to time, but I've tried to make my posts more targeted to the consumer so that I can generate direct business.  Maybe it's part of evolving, or maybe it was a little bit of burnout, but I'm still working towards finding the "right" blogging balance.  Sorry for the long-winded comment.

Diane - well, I appreciate your compliment, but I sure am NOT able to do ti all. I am spending far less time on some things that i would like to, but very glad about the business. As far as a shrink, well, I guess we only have each other for support and consolation.

Adam - well I think you raise some excellent points and issues that many of us have faced; certainly I have. Keeping up with it has become increasingly difficult, especially if you try to blend both the networking with the focus on business. It's all part of the evolution I think we all go through in our own way and at our own pace. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Thank goodness I love cold coffee.  I find when I write something at 6:30 am it's much better than something I write after showing property an dealing with contract negotiations.  I started blogging because my seo told me I had to do it.  Now I'm addicted too!  Great post Jeff!  And a lot of old times still don't get it.

05/05/2008 08:29 AM by Annette Smith Sarasota FL Real Estate (RE/MAX Alliance Group)

Thanks for the post Jeff.  I'm still trying to convince myself that blogging is a business getter.  I've actually had a few requests from clients due to my AR profile.  I guess it can't hurt, plus it's FREE!  Everything else seems to cost an arm and a leg.

05/06/2008 08:51 PM by Rob Gerichs (RE/MAX Honolulu)

I hear ya about the coffee!  But, it's the opposite. I drink my cup while blogging and reading others' blogs and forget the pot is on for my last cup and it burns. Guess I'll have to invest in an automatic shut off machine!
