Santa Clarita a suburb of Los Angeles under Siege by Fire

One of the scariest forces of nature has attacked the Santa Clarita area FIRE. As of this writing 1500 hundred homes are in danger more than 17 homes destroyed and numerous other commercial structures. The size of the fire is about 35 square miles approximately 22,000 acres of land.

This is sadly only contained depending which news outlet you turn on to about 10-20%.

There is a special connection to this area for a few reasons for me. One of course is my connection to the Lange Foundation, the Animal Rescue organization that we support. This is where Satchmo used to be fostered. More importantly where St. Bonnies Animal Sanctuary is, the satellite “ranch” of the Lange Foundation.

Needless to say last I heard, numerous local volunteers went and saved the animals and are fostering them nearby. The concern I have is these volunteers’ homes are also in jeopardy hope the Fire Department will be able to save them.

Those of us who live on the West Side of Los Angeles can only watch with anxiety because the roads are closed. We could not go and help.

To give you the summary. The Sand Fire broke out Friday afternoon along the northbound 14 Freeway near Sand Canyon Road and rapidly spread over thousands of acres to the east of Santa Clarita.

As of this writing there are more than 1600 Fire Fighters battling this huge fire. More than 15 helicopters aided by 122 Engines.

One of our friends who used to be very active on this platform years ago Connor T. MacIvor  is right in the thick of this mess. Hopefully Connor and his family are all right.

Endre,

Thanks for mention, I am glad that I was able to help.  I am sorry to hear about Santa Clarita's fire, and I am happy that the animals are safe.  I know that our local shelter often steps us to handlle surrounding communities that are overpopulated with strays, etc.  You remind me that I should bring my old towels for their cages and sponsor a few more cats...Sponsorship is a great marketing tool, as the cats that are sponsored seem more desirable for adoption...A

Endre,  It just makes me sick to my stomach to read and hear about fires like this. I cannot watch fires on the news.  It brings me too much sadness. I think about the animals ... helpless and dependent upon humans to get them to safety. Prayers for true containment ... and safety for all.

ALL LIFE MATTERS!!!

Thanks for the mention.  I'm glad I could help.

I have chills (and it's really hot here today) from reading this post. I did catch a headline on my computer this morning about the fire and the animal santuary. From what I read, the animals are all safe, and the fire turned before it hit there. The prayers must be working.

My heart goes out to everyone in that area. I've watched a few fires from my home and had my car loaded and ready to go. So I know that feeling. Thankfully I don't know what it's like to lose my home to a fire.

Endre

It's such a scary thing, and it just keeps growing. We were in LA yesterday and the sky in the Culver City area was really eerie looking because of all the smoke. Jeff Turner lives in Santa Clarita as well I believe. It's been a tough fire season so far and it's far from over. Thoughts and prayers for all those who are struggling with, affected by, and combating, this tragic fire

Jeff Dowler CRS  I had no idea that Jeff Turner lives there too.... on a side note yes the sky was eerie yesterday in Westchester too because of the smoke. Then one of the neighbors....I have to shake my head was having an out door dinner barbecue with flame torches, Diane could not believe it and needless to say she was concerned...Endre

Endre

Hopefully they can gain some control over this fire - it's pretty scary, and bring back painful memories of the fire we had in San Diego in 2007, and then in 2014.

Seems like a pretty thoughtless and careless neighbor given how dry it is!!

Hi Endre - We hope that the fire can be contained quickly and with minimal losses. From our own experiences with wildfires here in Colorado, we know how terrifying and destructive these can be.
