It was a very long post, and I read every word, and then!

This is just annoying.

You find a post written by a new blogger on ActiveRain in the First Timers section.  Looks pretty good.  I start reading and am sort of hooked, thinking to myself, "Good job, Newbie!"

As I read, I start to compose my comments - something perfect, like a compliment on her well-written first blog effort here and a warm welcome to our community.

Then, with fingers ready to dance on my keyboard, I see it:

Comments have been disabled by the author

Well, that's a buzz kill!

ActiveRain is a social network for real estate professionals, and we can't be very social if you back off and don't allow comments!

So to today's disabler, your first effort was very well written, and welcome to ActiveRain!

I have decided to disable comments on my market reports. These reports are primarily produced for my outside blog. The comments are a distraction there. Thus, my decision to disable.

I've gotten to point myself if I don't see any comments on a post I like to see if they are disabled before reading

If disabled I just move on

At one point I had to turn off comments to non-Active Rainers.  I was getting spammed to death with ads and crazy stuff.  It was sad that folks mess up a good thing.

I know the feeling.  BUT - It was not on AR that I had the problem. It was on my own website. The spam software is much improved now, but I still have to approve the comment before it is posted.

I can understand why a new blogger could be timid - I was too!

But then I went to RainCamp and understood the value of what I was doing, why I was doing it, and how to do things right. It was in that room in Houston, a big room filled with members of ActiveRain, many who were new to AR too, that I truly felt confident that I joined the right group.  I sure wish Bob Stewart would consider implementing RainCamp again.

Dear Patricia,

Could it have been an accident? I always make mistakes, when I am learning new things.

I do hope you reached out to the blogger to share your opinion on this - it could have been they didn't know the system.  But, I totally agree, the comments only add to the post itself!  BTW, you know, I thought you were going to say that you found that same post, originally written by someone else!  LOL

HA! Frustrating for sure!   This is the same reaction I have when I read a well-written post from a newbie, and the deeper I get in to it, the more it's "TOO" well-written . . . and then I check and it's a cut 'n paste job!

I'm a newbie...one day strong!!  It was scary to post my first blog. But I recevied nothing but positive feedback.  I would imagine that this AR community is very supportive to those of us  entering for the first time unless the posts were offensive and warranted negative feedback. I would tend to agree that it is a newbie mistake or the person can't handle the thought of getting any negative comments.

Hi Stacie Streets Welcome to AR one day strong!  Sorry I missed your original post, but welcome and keep on blogging.  This is a great community of like-minded people from all over.  If I can be of any help, please let me know.

While frustrating, it was probably a new user issue rather than a deliberate attempt to stifle discussion.  Or, the new user is more used to internet discussion groups where the comments can be very divisive and inflammatory.

Either way, they will probably figure it out and amend their ways in due course, particularly if they see this post!

Hi Patricia Kennedy - I think Phil Ormsby & Randy Prothero probably got this one right.  The new user does not understand how unique and supportive activerain is.

To truly drive the point home, you could have disable comments on this one too.

That's what we have called harsh teaching.
