May 1, 2008...The real beginning of Spring in many places...and a day celebrated by many people in many Countries for many different reasons!!!
For example, in Hawaii...today is Lei Day...a floral celebration of sorts commemorating the art of the practice of 'Leiing'...welcoming visitors with a necklace of beautiful exotic brilliantly colored flowers!
In communist countries, May 1 was celebrated as the 'workers day'...perhaps in contrast to the feast of St. Joseph, celebrated in Christian circles as the patron Saint of workers!
We in the United States have adopted this day as an annual day of prayer, for our Country, our blessings, our world, our citizenry, etc.!
But the most special reason I can remember celebrating May 1, and this brings back memories of my early childhood, is that it signals the beginning of the month when Mary, the Mother of Jesus is honored by the Church!!! In grade school we would collect bouquets of fresh flowers usually picked from
our own tiny backyards...to be placed before statues of Mary in her honor and remembrance...daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, brightly colored roses, sweet smelling lilacs of white and various shades of purple...there were fragrances and beautiful bouquets to behold everywhere, as we sang traditional Mary songs...awe inspiring hymns full of Spring Joy as tiny children paraded festively around the Maypole!!!
Did we worship Mary by this practice of ours...was she held up as an idol??? Do we worship George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Franklin D.
Roosevelt, Florence Nightingale, or Susan B. Anthony when we erect statues in their honor and memory, or mint coinage with their depiction engraved upon them??? Heck no!!! Another classic example of how we've thrown out the baby with the bath water!!!
We're a melting pot of diverse cultures, races, and ethnic backgrounds in search of a heritage, a tradition...something to commemorate...something to honor...something to recall our history and lineage...
We say in business, in sports, in many other endeavors...'go back to the basics'...maybe it's time!!!
Fran, I forgot it was May Day? When we were kids we would pick flowers from the neighborhood, ring the doorbell and run for the little old ladies. They were probably not so happy with us for picking the flowers but then would smile when we gave them the bouquets!! May day was also my grandmother's birthday. Just so happens she was German and stuck behind the wall. When I was younger we actually went to a real May Day parade in East Germany. It was weird. All of my aunts and uncles had to go, the govt made them walk in the parade. The towns were all dressed up in red flags!! My grandmother died one week after the wall came down. Glad she lived to see it!!
