Considering the gruesome history, it may seem odd that this post be included in the 100 Happy Days Challenge. However, I do love learning the history of the places I visit. And, you have to admit, history isn't always filled with fairy tale endings. Nevertheless, it serves as an opportunity to develop a new perspective on the history of our country.
When Gail and I were in Walla Walla last week, it was recommended we visit to the Marcus Whitman National Historic site, just west of town. This site is managed by the National Park Service. We walked the site and then stopped to talk to the ranger on duty. The ranger was extremely knowlegeable and informative, explaining the history of the mission. If you know your history, it had a rather gruesome ending. The picture is of the memorial grave site, where the 13 massacred victims finally rest in peace.
In spite of the ultimate demise of the mission, I was feeling blessed with my life as I was constantly reminded of the extremely difficult conditions under which the pioneers lived. They were subjected to extremely difficult conditions and never ending work, just to survive. In reading their journals, you understand they found joy in the smallest things.
If you read the biography of Marcus Whitman, you will realize what a truly amazing man he was. He was definitely a workaholic, developing the mission, settling the land, acting as minister and doctor at the mission.
After visiting such a site, I feel so blessed to be living in this day and age, in very comfortable conditions... and only working because I want to.
Oh, and as a bonus, we were able to watch a tee-pee being constructed. That was interesting. They do this at the park every day at 10:00 a.m. If a young person is present, they let them help with the construction.
Have a Happy Day,

I love history and learning about the background of our towns and places. Having the National Parks Service handle it means it will be well maintained.

It was so interesting, Debbie Reynolds . I wasn't much of a history student but when I visit places and can visual the story, it makes a world of difference. Thanks for reading and commenting, Debbie.
