People pay for that?

This was a question that someone asked me when I told them I staged houses and did interior redesign. They were referring to redesign. He couldn't believe that people would actually pay to have someone rearrange their rooms. He then said the people were stupid. I was wondering if maybe offering this service is such a good idea. I have had no response about redesign when I mention it. Then I happened to mention the starting price of $225.00 and felt like I was on trial. Everyone in the room looked at me like I was crazy.

I am being competitive with my competition in this area and charge five to ten dollars more because I live in a bigger city than my competition. Maybe my approach is wrong. I get the standard question of ,"what is staging?" but I never hear what is redesign? Isn't it the same as staging only the end results are different? So should it be known as staging for the not for sale home or should it be a subcategory of staging? Just the results are different. I know that redesign focuses on showing off the homeowner's things and staging shows off the house; or am not making any sense at all. When I hear people say designer I have to tell them I am a redesigner.

About the nomenclature of "green designer" since we are reusing the owner's things and not buying new? I don't like the term "re". I feel though that there should be a distinction between interior and redesigner. How about ecofriendly designer, use what you have designer, or designer of the domestically challenged? If I went with these terms then I would have to explain to the client my reasoning behind the name. I don't know about you, but I get tired of explaining what a stager does. I know we need to tell the public but this concept(even if it has not been called that) has been going on for 20 years. Why is it taking so long for the public to catch on? Maybe if everyone was faimiliar with staging, then we would have to work as hard to try and find clients.

One would think that the public would catch on. I realize that some people may never need to move from their houses and would not require our services, but since the term "home staging" was coined over 20 years ago you would think it would take off like the fads we had as kids and still remember. This blog is the writer's opinion and should be taken with a grain of salt. I know that my opinions do not or may not reflect the general opinions of others, but the writer's mind sometimes wanders off and topics like these come up.

Have a great evening!

What a cute widget! Well, I have found that redesign work often comes after staging. I have done redesigns for agents who were so blown away by staging, that they wanted me to come and work magic on their own homes. I have also done redesigns for staging clients. For example, I stage their rental property for sale, and then they hire me to redesign the home they are living in. It seems to go hand-in-hand, so I think you'll find that once you get more staging under your belt, the redesign work will follow. Good luck!

Thanks Elaine! I always like your advice. Isn't the fish widget darling? I found it on widgetbox.com I wonloaded 30,000 widgets and the fish was one of the most popular. There is all sorts of stuff on that website. The water, fish, and fish food color can be changed. If you click your mouse then it will drop fish food. The fish will follow your mouse also.

OMG! That's adorable! If only feeding my own fish was that simple! ;)

Those fish I could live with!  Sheila:  Check out the Redesign Renegades gruop here on AR - they address these kinds of issues.  Julie

Thanks Julie! I will check it out. The fish seem to be popular. I am glad I downloaded it. 71,000 other people also downloaded it. Go to widgetbox.com. They have a really cute cat that will chase your mouse and it will meow and lick itself. That one is cute too. They also have bubblewrap that can be popped using your mouse. My sons liked that one. All it is is a picture of bubblewrap and your mouse needs to be over the bubble exactly then you click your mouse and it pops the bubble and makes the sound too.

I like the fish because you don't have to clean out the bowl and I have 2 cats who happen to go fishing in the fish bowl. This eliminates dead fish and yuckky, dirty bowls.

I have Redesigned several homes for my Staging clients.  Such as Elaine, Realtors and home owners love what we do in our Staged homes, so they ask us to help them with their own.  OR curious neighbors come through the Staged homes, and want us to give their lived in homes the same "look" or upgrades.  I haven't has too many "out-of-the-blue" redeign requests, but it's still a great marketing tool as one of your services.

Shiela, it is fun to see people's reactions to what it is we love and are paid to do. You may wish, if the time is right, to remind the disbelievers that there are also people who pay to have someone shape and paint their fingernails -- even their toenails. How hard is that to believe?

Sheila - I think redesign is something many people want and also something many people do not.  Many people are happy with their homes looking average or not so good as that is not something they really care about.  Our clients are people who value  a lovely home and "get" while they may love their furnishings etc... something is not quite with the room and will pay to have that problem fixed.  You're a new business it is going to take some time to get the jobs and for word of mouth to take hold

Sheila~I agree people don't really have a grasp on the concept of redesign, however, it will catch on.  Currently, I have 4 clients they all want different aspects of redesign and a lot of that just crosses over to decorating and tweaking what they already have.  I have a list of different services on my website.  It might help you as it did me to run off some flyers that explain what services you offer.  I call it TOP 10 REASONS TO HIRE A REDESIGNER, I will email it to you, if you like.  As far as the guy who said it was stupid, as Forrest Gump would say "stupid is as stupid does."  Oh well, can't win 'em all: the point is to never give up, you go girl!!!

Redesign referrals are fewer than Staging, but my Staging clients are a great source of referrals for redesign.

Hi Sheila,

I like the fish but LOVE your header.... It does seem to be a little more difficult to explain redesign...  Why not try keeping a portfolio in your vehicle to show before and after photos of a redesign.. Also, as Joni mentioned have a flyer printed with photos and her Top 10 reasons for a redesign.. Joni = would love to have a copy also- please..
