It only happens every 4 years and it has come back around this year! That's it...the Olympics!
What a special treat to participate and follow for several weeks. These events are a historical occurrence that can be enjoyed by both young and old.
This time around, the Summer Olympics will be held in Rio de Janeiro "Rio", Brazil. This is the first Olympics to be held in a South American country. Rio is one of the most visited cities in South America and is know for its natural settings and beaches. This Portuguese-speaking country has culture and color to offer to the many visitors it will host this month.
Here are some fun facts about this year's Olympics!
- This year's games are hosting a record number of countries participating. 207 world countries will be traveling to Rio to exhibit their skills in their individual sports.
- There are 28 sports in the 2016 Summer Olympics.
- There are 41 disciplines represented.
- And 306 events!
- These events will be broadcasted over a period of days from August 5, 2016 - August 21, 2016.
- The Opening ceremonies are the most watched "event" of the Summer Olympics and will be aired on television on Friday, August 5.
- To host all of these events, it will take 33 venues to accommodate all of the spectators and athletes.
- The largest venue, used for the Opening & Closing Ceremonies, can hold a little over 74,000 people.
- The Olympic Village will require the following for its visitors:
- 80,000 Chairs
- 70,000 Tables
- 60,000 Clothes Hangers
- 29,000 Matresses
- 10,000 Smart Phones
- 6,000 Televisions
- There are 306 sets of medals ready to give out to the strongest competitors for all of the Olympic sports. That's a total of 918 individual medals!
- You will be able to witness the more common Olympic sports such as archery, gymnastics, and weightlifting. But, did you know that you can also view some of the less-common sports such as badminton, canoeing, sailing, and dressage (an equestrian sport).
