The Ego Branding is dangerous!  But BRANDING is Essential.

Have you seen the advertisements?  Big Billboard....Agent glamour shot with their phone number.   Is this ego advertising?  Or are they branding themselves smartly?

One thing is for sure, as people become successful, its very easily to become complacent or to become a little prideful with what you have accomplished.  It is a self improvement battle to achieve success and remain humble and on task with driving value into the community.  I always strive to keep a check to make sure that I dont do anything ego driven.  But that I do everything...as creating value. Its only natural to become prideful after much success.  One must know the difference before their marketing gets out of whack.

Name Branding vrs Ego Advertising -  The type of campaign you are running could be a side effect of whats going on in your inner self. What ever is going on inside of you is what you will create externally.  You will end up getting what you want.  Look at your advertising, it is manifesting to you what is going on inside of you.  Why are you marketing the way you are?  That is the question.  So what is the difference?

Name Branding Advertising: Consistent value driven advertising with a business goal in mind.

Results of Great Name Branding:

  1. People that you have never met or heard of are sending referrals to you.
  2. People feel like they know you and they like you....without even meeting you.
  3. People hear or see other agents advertising and think its you.  (A person I see every 3 months said.."hey Dave every time I go to a Jazz game I think of you....every time I see that advertising of yours at the Jazz games, I think of you."  By the way, I never advertise at the Jazz.   OR  I asked  a client why he called....he said "I hear you on the radio all the time."  By the way...I dont do radio advertisments.   Great branding is the whole pass me a kleenex thing.  Kleenex is the brand of tissue. You become the brand of real estate agents.
  4. People refer to you as the expert.

Behavior sidenote when you are doing great name branding: This is the type of behaviors that occur when you are in a branding mode instead of ego mode.

  1. When you arent offended at other agents advertising.
  2. You are nice to everybody and see them as superior people meaning you see their strengths and talk as if they are equals.
  3. You always introduce yourself.
  4. You see competitors as a necessity to success.
  5. You see other agents as an asset to your success.
  6. When you praise other agents and you praise your clients and develop meaningful relationships with them all.

EGO Advertising  -   This even goes for those people who dont have the big billboards or the big advertising.  This actually applies to everybody despite your marketing budget.

  1. When you do advertising because you want to have your face on a billboard or you want people to call you up and say they saw you.
  2. When you admire how good your business cards look when you get your new picture on them.  Ohh you stare at them...smile....and than stare some more....ask your friends..does this look good?
  3. When you see another agent have a tv commercial and you want to have one now.  (I learned this the hard way.  I was guilty of it.  Now if I do a commercial only when it is value driven with a business goal in mind.)
  4. When you build a business because you want to see yourself plastered everywhere.
  5. When you are in self denial.  (I heard an agent sadly say this once,"I dont work for anybody..I have my own company..Im affiliated with such and such brokerage...but this is my own company.")
  6. You are just excited to see that you are "Owner" on your business card.

Behavior sidenote:

  1. When you expect people to know who you are.
  2. You expect people to come say...ohhh are you this person?
  3. When you see others as inferior.  You are the smartest and fairest of them all!  Mirror Mirror on the Wall ;)
  4. When you speak negatively about every other agents marketing.  (When I did this in the past I learned that it was a need of my inner self to feel more important or smarter.  Its actually like taking cocaine.  Doing this is an artificial drug that feeds our ego.  We must have a healthy love of our self...and when we do....we wont speak negative about others marketing.)
  5. When you talk about other agents as being stupid or dumb or anything negative.

When we praise others, give value, and focus on self improvement we can brand ourselves effectively.  We will brand intelligently only when our inner desires are inline with selflessness. That same marketing will attract people into our lives.

When we talk negatively about others...we are in  a sense ego feeding ourselves even if we dont have a big billboard.  But that inner need to feed one's ego will create ego advertising.

So in order to start branding yourself effectively....You need to start by praising others.  Praising others will help you see the positive in others.  It will heal your soul and you wont have the need of ego marketing.

SO ENSURE THAT YOU ARE BRANDING AND NOT MAKING EGO CENTRIC MARKETING DECISIONS...Will you please take this time and praise someone else?  Who do you admire and why?  Maybe  your favorite ActiveRain Blogger?

Nice article Dave. I agree whole heartled about ego vs branding. The ego branding spills into lead generation also. I think a lot has to do with education.

Dave is well branded and well respected in our market.

Dave - Great post! I completely agree it all about branding :)

Ego branding or branding branding as long as it works it works for me.

Carol Judd is constantly learning. If she does not know the answer, she will research it. If she has a situation she can not resolve she will research and brain storm to figure it out. In fact it reminds me of my Father. If he didn't have the answer he would go and find it.

Dave, I am working on branding right now.  I don't have a glamour shot, or even my photo on my card - never have.  However, I am trying to move away from everything being attached to my name?  Currently my website is Audreyjune.com?  I am having a new site put together that doesn't have my photo or my name.  It will be more generic to help the consumer and I hope I will get business from that.  Right now about 85% of my business is all referral - which is a blessing - just want to expand a bit!  I am book marking this so I can come back and reread it not running out the door :).  Thanks!

05/02/2008 08:15 AM by Audrey June-Forshey, GRI, Gaithersburg, MD (RE/MAX Realty Group)

Dave, A very enjoyble and well written post!  I have recently taken my photo off all my business cards!  While I am trying to brand my name, I am also branding my Brokerage name. I am going to bookmark this post for myself because I certainly do not want to be ego branding!  I have been guilty of speaking negatively about other Realtors, though, usually in response to someone elses rant, but never mentioned names. Sometimes its very hard to praise someone who is not doing their job. In fact, I was just about to blog a rant about Realtors not returning calls for weeks!! Guess I will blog something else:)

Good post. I think that it's good to look at other agent's marketing and break-down ways it could have been more effective. When asked, I give constructive feedback - not negative, just helpful. I also think that it's a good idea to have your picture on your card because you want your networking contacts to associate your face with your name. It's important to remember that not all name/face advertising is "ego advertising", but your points are certainly vaild indicators to keep the ego in check.

05/02/2008 02:25 PM by Katie Graham - Denver Real Estate (Preferred Properties)

Great post! Branding is the most important tool we have for sucess! You made great points here!

05/02/2008 03:34 PM by Dawna Graham, River City ReDesign (River City ReDesign Inc.)

Great comment Katie.  Audrey and Karen, I like marketing that is niche focused and not necessarily agent focused.  When you are an expert in an area it is good that your pic is there so people recognize you.  I have been very blessed to get referrals the way I do...but it is because my picture is on the marketing just as Katie mentioned.  Remember, ego branding doesnt mean you have your picture on everything.  Ego branding has to do with why you have your picture on everything.  Is it a business purpose where you are focused on helping others.....or is it an ego feed.  THe behaviors above help identify which one we might be doing.

05/03/2008 12:25 AM by Utah Dave and Utah Homes for Sale (Robison & Company Real Estate)

This is a great blog- I think it is all about sincerity, but people like different things so.....What gets a referal from one person may be viewed as over the top to another.

Dave, good post, the ego thing may work for some agents. I personally dont care much for it, but hey different strokes----Bart

I remember in marketing class how we all had trouble understanding the concept of branding...maybe you can blog on more examples of branding using examples outside of real estate?  I am going to subscribe to your blog to learn from you.

05/03/2008 10:29 AM by AMERICAN CASH SOLUTIONS INC

I like your perspective on ego type marketing.  I also like how you incorporated how some people need to feed their egos by putting other peoples ideas down.  It happens.

05/03/2008 11:22 AM by Ryan Vivo, Realtor Solano County Gateway Realty (Gateway Realty)

Great Post!  I meet people and they I seen you in paper every Sunday!  No, sorry, not me!  But they do affiliate me with Real Estate!  I have a GREAT marketing consultant and she won't let me put my face on my own website.  She believes, as you do, BRANDING does it!  Your branding = real estate and that's the way people have to think about you!  Good Luck!

05/03/2008 11:57 AM by Diane Lombardino (Bluffs Real Estate)

There are always "those" (the invisible "they") who will spin a "brand" around and try to bury it into the ground.

I recall a manager who used to refer to "Country Living" as "Assisted Living".  (Even though everyone at the meeting chuckled, I found it to be shallow, and unprofessional.)

If you want to meet the competition "head-on, head-on, head-on" apply your brand directly to the fore-front consumers, and continue to give exceptional service.

I really appreciate this post.  Ego based thinking is very easy to get caught up in...and like you correctly note...you don't even need a billboard; the story can be manufactured within one's own mind.  Thanks for posting a blog that was so well written.  Excellent Featured post!

Those are all awesome posts.  Thanks Lola you are right....it is easy to get caught up in.  Thats a great story 123 Happy Street Owner..whats your name anyway? :)   Ryan and Diane, I enjoyed your comments.  We are all on the right track I believe.  SO yes, Charles, I will definitely do what you talked about on branding.  Great idea!

05/03/2008 01:00 PM by Utah Dave and Utah Homes for Sale (Robison & Company Real Estate)

Our company's brand is so strong in our market that is compliments the agent's brands.  We don't use photos on cards or hire billboards.  We're much more focused on internet marketing and local publications.  It's fun when clients refer business to you because of your reputation.  It's one of the pluses of doing the hard work to create your own brand.

Hi Dave,

Great article.  Thanks for the info.

Side question - what is the size pic for your background pic?  I'd like to use an image on my blog like you have, but don't know the size you need to make it in order for it to fill both sides so nicely.

Thanks!

05/03/2008 02:39 PM by Bob Haywood (McGraw Realtors)

Great post Dave!! I try not to target anyone directly as every agent is guilty of the 'ego ad' at one time or another during their career, but it's amazing that some just NEVER get it!

I just relocated to the Charlotte NC area, and I LOVE the area and the people, but the number of agent 'yearbooks' that are printed in the newspapers by various companies is amazing. If they would take all that space and dedicate it to some awesome property ads, they could have amazing floor calls at the office! Or how about announcing a local charity in need, with your company info at the bottom, instead of 30 agent faces with teeny tiny printed names and phone numbers? That's the big issue with the ads; the public perception of the real estate community from these ads that plaster 'Multi Million Dollar Producer!' everywhere, and then wonder why sellers are negotiating commissions so low...

Branding is possible even for small businesses and especially realty professionals.  Most companies charge branding cost to building goodwill and name recognition.

Dave - just AWESOME!  I think REALTORS too often feel threatened by other REALTORS when they see advertising, etc.  I am probably on the opposite end of this spectrum.  When I am involved in a real estate transaction - I like to think the other REALTORS are also my clients.  Not in the respect that I have a loyalty to them like I do to my clients - but they also talk about other agents.  We all do.  How many times have you shown a house and said "Oh no, I have to deal with THAT agent".  I have even heard other agents say they won't show houses listed by certain people.  My point is -your reputation among other agents does matter.  When I was interviewing real estate companies after getting my license - I kept hearing good things about my current broker from every other broker I interviewed with.  WOW, did that have an impact.  I'm still with the same broker today!

This is an excellent post!  As a newbie, this hit right on the head with how to find myself as an agent.  I do NOT want to have the huge billboard with my name plastered on it.  Why?  Because, I am a buyer too, and as a buyer, all I think is, "That's a nice picture," but I have no idea what the heck the billboard was about.

Do you do consulting?  I want to know more!

LOL....it's funny you mention the billboards. I saw an agent on several and was commenting on it to a friend. I wouldn't want my mug up there for everyone to drive past...hehe.

Five years ago I attended a Hobbs-Herder seminar in Vegas.  I was still in the "newbie" category in real estate but even I could recognize the interchangeable heads when it came to real estate advertising.  Though I didn't spend the 30,000 they wanted to get a full package I did come away with the understanding of setting yourself apart from the crowd was one of the keys to success.

Hi "Utah Dave" ...

I have a standard line for this topic...I bet you knew that :)

It goes like this...

If I were anymore branded I would cease to be me :)

What ego? :)

Funny post but true. I see agents with their glamour shots and wonder "why?" I've actually met people at an office and talked to them and THEN learn their name and think "I've seen your photo and you look 50 years older in person" because the photo is 50 years old!  That CAN'T be branding!

05/05/2008 09:11 AM by LaNita Cates (REMAX of Joliet)

Cindy, yes Ive been to Hobbs Herder. They have great examples of people who have branded themselves.  Branding is very important...otherwise you remain what American Idol Simon Cowell says "Forgettable."  The obstacle to why many people dont become leaders is due to the desire of wanting to be praised by others.  When our service of giving to others is our motivation....we will be able to brand effectively for a profitable business.  Thanks for all the great comments!

Dave - Excellent, thank you.  The Kleenex thing is exactly what branding is.  I am working on my brand and just being myself - I do admire my cards sometimes, though, I look so good against that desert backdrop!

Dave you hit the nail on the head.  You make total sense explaining the ego branding.  I've just recently started to think about marketing myself in a branding manner (no more random hunt and peck marketing for me) and you made some great points to reaffirm my beliefs in branding.  Thanks!

DAve...you are absolutely right about branding.  I have coached nearly 100 agents on branding...but it still surprises me how many continue to put it off...and continue to do hap-hazzard (sp?) marketing.  If they only realized that they would could a much quicker and higher return on their marketing if it was branded instead of...typical.  Aloha.  Jeff - Coaching from Maui
