Gainesville, FL Restaurant Profile: Ichiban Sushi Japanese Restuarant

By

Ichiban Sushi is my recomended sushi restaurant in Gainesville, FL. I have been going here for almost 8 years, and it has become a tradition to celebrate anything (a closing, birthday, etc.) by getting sushi from Ichiban.  There are other good places to get sushi in Gainesville such as Dragonfly, Kotobuki, Miya, Yamato...the list goes on.  However, I've been coming here for years, it is conveniently in my "quadrant" of town, the prices are great and the food is wonderful.

Sushi and sashimi not your thing? Ichiban offers everything from Teriyaki to tempura, to katsu and Udon dishes.  Ichiban also offers Pad Thai, a variety of appetizers including spring rolls, kimchi, fried tofu, edamame, gyoza, etc., salads (the wakame salad is excellent, as is the spicy tuna salad with wakame added to it), and miso or onion soup.

If you've read my other profile about Chutnees Indian Cuisine, you know I'm into two things: take-out and ordering the same things over and over again.

Tonight my boyfriend and I picked up some sushi, the same 6 rolls we always get:

Florida Roll - Salmon, tuna, cream cheese and avocado

Spicy Salmon Tempura Roll x 2 - Salmon tempura, avocado and spicy sauce, topped with tempura flakes

Crispy Roll - Grilled salmon, cream cheese, crab meat and scallions, deep fried in tempura flakes

Bagel Roll - smoked salmon, scallion and cream cheese

Eel Roll - sweet (eel sauce) smoked eel and cream cheese.  It used to be cucumber rather than cream cheese, which I prefer and order instead of the cream cheese since we have so many rolls with cream cheese.

1 order each of spicy sauce and eel sauce, for extra dipping pleasure.

I've never had an item here I disliked.  Ichiban also offers a full bar and dessert.

This sounds like a place for my son. I took him to a sushi bar a few weeks back, and he starts ordering every type of sushi, just to try it out. I am limiting his desires for the sake of my pocketbook.

Wow that is a lot of sushi!  That is one thing I am not a big fan of, but I loveeeeeeee some fried rice with teriyaki chicken and mayonaise sauce.  Here of late though, I have preferred making it myself.

Frank -  Yeah, sushi is pretty expensive.  That's why we only get it to celebrate something! ;)

Jeremy - Do you use a wok to make your fried rice?  When you say "mayo sauce", do you mean the orange spicy sauce like on my sushi?  If you have a really good recipe, please post it!  We have been looking for a good fried rice recipe for a while and unfortunately it never tastes anywhere near the Chinese Restaurant.

Also, I bet you'd like some of the rolls on my plate, if you like cooked fish/shellfish (grilled salmon, crab, etc.).  I only have one roll that has raw fish in it on the plate.  Ichiban has more cooked rolls that raw and we have to get the cooked as my boyfriend has a little trouble with the raw thing.

Yes, Margaret, we are hearty eaters! hehe

This restaurant doesn't have red bean ice cream, but I have seen it at other restaurants in the area.  Just wait till I profile my favorite Ice Cream store in town - they have the most unique flavors ever.

"Honestly, honey, I'm going to the ice cream store for the sake of research!"

My son turned us on to Dragonfly when we were there for his fraternity's Parent's Weekend (I had a look at the fraternity's kitchen and decided I had to eat ANYWHERE else!). We'll try Ichiban on our next drive over. Thanks Angela!

Christina - When you're in Gainesville, be sure to visit ME!  I'll take you there. ;)

Tiffany - <high five> Sushi is definitely one of my favorite foods if not my favorite!

Robin - I'm not going to lie - Dragonfly is very good.  The downside for me is that when I had it, it was a really busy Saturday night to-go order and I'm not sure if what I received in the box is representative of the quality you receive when you actually eat in.  I remember thinking it was comparable to Ichiban and good, but I really need to give it another shot so I can determine if Ichiban is better.  Maybe I'll review Dragonfly next so as not to steer you in the wrong direction. ;)

A big reason I go there is because it is so close to my house and I don't have to fight downtown or Newberry road traffic to get my fix.  Well, that and it's really good!  They are actually opening another location (I think downtown), but I don't know any details beyond that.  I'm not even sure if I'm suppossed to know or if I just busted the owner talking with the contractor.  They also expanded their current location when the business next door closed and remodeled so they look really sheik now.  Even so, it gets really packed in there.

If you ever go, call or e-mail me so I can give you the parking secret, Robin!
