Embedding videos into a WordPress blogging platform

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Shoreline New Hampshire & Maine

If you have a WordPress blogging platform and share my recent frustrations at trying to embed a YouTube video, there is a very quick and simple solution I found at Jack Humphrey.com

The problem occurs because WordPress, like several blogging platforms, uses a WYSIWYG (whizzygig) or "What You See Is What You Get" editor for writing posts.

Apparently the WordPress version of WYSIWYG doesn't like to embed things very well because all my attempts were coming out blank or scrambled.

Here's the solution; there is a check box on your WordPress blog that turns off your WYSIWYG editor and lets you simple paste the embed code into the entry or post box.

  1. Log into your Word Press blog
  2. Click the "Users" link just to the right of top center.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and uncheck this block: Use the visual rich editor when writing
  4. Now just paste the embed code to the right of your video into the entry box, click "publish" and you're done.
After publishing your blog log back in and recheck the "Use the visual rich editor when writing" box to restore your WYSIWYG editor to it's former setting. After pubishing your blog with the embedded video you can safely recheck this box without disturbing your blog but you will need to uncheck it again to edit any blogs with embedded videos.

This is a quick and easy way to make videos of your listings or other subjects, post them on YouTube, and then paste them into your WordPress blog.

Hi Jim - I don't use Wordpress, but I just sent the link to this post to a friend who does.

Now if we could just have the ability to embed on AR for our listings -now THAT would be great!

I do my videos on OneTrueMedia.com. I can download to my hard drive to burn to a CD or have on my desktop. I can also embed them on my web site and blog. They also can be downloaded to YouTube and TypePad. Don't believe they mentioned WordPress, though. If you want to see what the image looks like once it's embedded, you can check the home page of my web site (elainereese.com). I have a tour of a new listing showing there at this time.

I don't like the linking feature of OneTrueMedia since they put their ads on the background screen.

Elaine, If you used youtube they give a url and code plus they host for free. Use the embedded code for Active rain. Here is a video I did for a new gated community. I also feel you get searched more by google since they own You Tube.

OK I went in and found the USERS tab. When I clicked on it I saw USER LIST BY ROLE at the top.  I did not see:
  1. Scroll to the bottom and uncheck this block: Use the visual rich editor when writing
Am I doing something wrong?

Maureen,

After you click the "USERS" tab you should see this underneath it.

"Your Profile and Personal Options"

Scroll to the bottom and uncheck the box in front of "Use the visual rich editor............."

"Personal Options

Use the visual rich editor when writing"

It should work then.

I looked at your blog: Knoxville Tennessee Real Estate Blog.  It looks great.  I like that you have all your personal information up at the top.  Sometimes I look at people's other blogs and I can't even tell where they work or how to contact them.  My blog is new and is a work in progress.  If you have any thought I'd love to hear them:  BLOG
