We All Have Something to Offer

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Golden Girls with SW Desert Homes BR564219000

We all have something to offerI enjoy going to REALTOR gatherings - big expos, big meetings, big events, and at them, my favorite thing to do is people watching.  You see, there isn't a formula for what makes a good real estate agent.  There isn't a blueprint, or a body type, or an aptitude.  What makes a good real estate agent - well that's subjective to our clients, isn't it?  What do they need?  Whom do they identify with? Where is the connection?

I've been taking some management classes through my company, Long Realty.  They've been very interesting and thought-provoking, and even...revealing.  In the first couple of meetings I was, well let me say, I AM intimidated a bit.  The room has quite a few of those 'big wigs' which is what I've always called the agents that turn a lot of transactions a year.  The room has quite a few teachers.  Also mixed in are those that are community minded, or civic minded, and are doing great things within the Real Estate field. And then there's me - and I don't consider myself a big wig, or any of those other things.

Last session, our guest speaker was going to show an example within his speech about typical behavior. He asked for a volunteer.  Well, wanting to learn, I raised my hand immediately, knowing folks rarely do.

He looked at me and said, "Why did you volunteer?  You weren't supposed to volunteer!  NOBODY volunteers immediately."

He was saying this light-hearted, but went on to share his case in point, on how folks tend to hang back when asked, until pity sets in, and then eventually a few hands will raise.

He said to me, "You're fearless!"

And I replied, "No, I just want to learn".  I wanted to see what he had to show us. without delay...and so I volunteered. It's a little bit of what I bring that's different, to a "management" table, so to speak.

And so, to my title of this little expose.

Our clients' needs are subjective, and as unique professionals, we're here to help.  It's a competitive business, for sure, but it's also all about those relationships and connections.

We all have something to offer.

This rings true for our family life, our spiritual life, our personal life, ...everything.  We all have something to offer.  We all have value.  All of us.

All of us.

Isn't he?  I'm always appreciative when an ambassador stops by!  And...of the comment string - sometimes you learn more from the conversation than from the original post!  I appreciate you stoppy by to comment.

That was excellent that you volunteered, and you are right, we all have something to offer.

By the way, I agree with Pat #5 about the "big wigs" - I haven't been impressed either (at least not yet).

Love this, Cara.  We do all have something to offer and we are all unique.  Are we going to hear the rest of the story?

Aug 24, 2016 11:47 PM
Cara Marcelle Mancuso

Well the rest of the story in the case of his illustration was, as a speaker, no one volunteers when you ask for one.  So you ask, wait, watch for pity to set in, and then pick a volunteer.  As a speaker, you're not supposed to get "psyched" out by waiting, because it's no big deal...  And so then, to illustrate his point before telling this story he asked for volunteers and I ruined his moment by raising my hand immediately, lol.  Today in that same class we are doing a "presentation meeting".  I get to do an entertaining piece, and then a little later (there's four of us) a teaching piece.  My goal is to look at ease, lol.

Fantastic story Cara Marcelle Mancuso. I love that you were not only able to shock the speaker, but your willingness to learn by being proactive, speaks volumes about your work ethic and dedication to honing your skills.  Congrats on the feature!

Thank you Chris.  I used to teach a competitive drama after school program called Forensics in Wisconsin.  Great fun and great preparation for public speaking, presenting, entertaining, etc.  I generally put myself in the speaker's shoes and volunteer when they ask for on.  I just don't volunteer for hypnotists....

Good for you for not being typical! You thwarted the speaker's plan to make his point but made a different one: "Don't assume that everyone fits the mold, because some of us don't."

Hi Cara, You are so right. We all have something to offer.

I disagree about the volunteering thing. There are people, like you, who will be the first to raise their hand, step up, and volunteer.

Congratulations on this Feature Post!

I see people volunteer as well.  I think most of the events, but perhaps I surround myself with doers - because those are certainly the most inspirational.

Being fearless is huge!  It means you're willing to take risks, and learn as you go.  BTW sometimes the "big wigs" are OK if they're not overly impressed with themselves.

Cara - Being just a little fearless is what makes us open to learning.  Push out of the safe place and it's amazing what happens ... the key ... hold everyone in the sphere of respect ... and then we truly see "we all have something to offer" .. indeed, all of us!
