Harris County TX Conducts Citizen’s Police Academy
Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman is inviting Harris County residents to attend Citizen’s Police Academy which starts its 11 week program on Thursday August 18, 2016. These classes are held one night each week for the 11 week . The mission is to educate citizens about the realities of law enforcement while receiving their feedback and concerns.
Participants are taken behind the badge which gives them a view of law enforcement from an officer’s perspective who is patrolling the streets. These classes include classroom instruction and is combined with hands on experiences that in many instances is similar to the training all officers have to go through.
Participants will be exposed to arrest procedures, firearms training simulator, live fie and operation of a police car on an Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC). This academy concludes with an actual ride along with on-duty deputy.
The classes start at 7 PM and end at 10 PM. They are being held at 19449 Katy Freeway in Houston ( close to Katy TX) zat Second Baptist Church.
All folks wanting to attend have to:
Fill out an application.
Agree to and pass a background check.
Sign a legal waiver.
Be at least 21 years old.
Some individuals are disqualified being those who:
Convicted of any felony offense.
Misdemeanor convictions will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
Any conviction of Family violence.
Any outstanding warrants.
Having an invalid driver's license.
I think this a great idea and will give numerous participants a close up look at what it means to be a police office and how dangerous this job is all the time.
Additional information is available by contacting Deputy Roy Guinn at 281-492-3601.
I just saw where this session is full but it appears this Police Academy will be held again during 2017.
