I don't often watch the news, I like to keep a positive attitude and the news can bring me down faster than a hot knife goes through butter! For some reason this morning I turned it on and waded through some horrific stories to get to the good stuff.
Not only did I find out today is National Dog Day (my dog's favorite day of the year) but I also watched an amazing clip about a dog in Canada that can sniff out the super-bug C DIFF. WOW!
Coming from a health care background and having a daughter that is a nurse, this is big news. The clip was about an English Spaniel named Angus. He has been hired by Vancouver General Hospital to sniff out this menacing super-bug, allowing staff to thoroughly clean surfaces where it lays in wait for its next victim. I think he can even sniff it out in people!
Angus isn't the first dog to sniff out C DIFF. Cliff, a beagle trained by a Dutch team was sniffing out C DIFF as early as 2012! Every hospital and long term care facility should hire dogs like Angus and Cliff. What a difference it would make to the infection rates in health care facilities. And I am sure they can be trained to sniff out more than C DIFF.
Dogs are amazing, aren't they? They can easily become family members, companions, they can lower blood pressure, allow people suffering from all sorts of issues to live a more normal life, the list is just too long to go on. They keep us safe and secure, they give more love and loyalty than we probably deserve!
Dogs are just the coolest, aren't they?
I'm still waiting for Georgia to tell me how she wants to celebrate National Dog Day. We already took a long walk, she rolled in all sorts of smelly things, she went into the corn field and ripped out a few stalks of corn, running with wild abandon though the fields. Ahhh.. to be a dog!
How are you and your beloved pooch going to celebrate National Dog Day today?
