Using Nature as Sculptural Art

Well here goes...my very first blog!  Hope it turns out ok.

Recently the homeowner behind me was high up in his palm trees cutting down these large "canoe looking" leaves.  As one dropped into my yard I immediately thought wall hanging!   I asked my neighbor for these other valuable art pieces that were destined for the yard trimming bin.  He was thinking along my lines and said "you can use these in your decorating business".

So I spray painted varnish on them, grouped them together and VOILA, they looked stunning in this tall vase I purchased on clearance at Pier 1.  Below is a picture of them in the living room of a vacant home we just staged.  (More pictures on that in another post!).

Ronelle - I thought I had taken more of a close-up of these.  When I go over to check on the home, I'll try & remember to get a closer picture.  They really are neat!

Fernando - Thanks for your compliment.  I bet you can find some of these "boats" in your neck of the woods!

Hi Cindy!! - How are you? Are you planning on going to the IRIS convention in Oct?  I hope so! Thank you for your kind words and encouragement!  Bye for now!

Wow, what a great idea, I've used some of the big date palm seed that fall down, but never thought to use these, and I just had a bunch cut and thrown out...

Michelle  - You're very welcome!  Hope you can use it sometime.

Cindy - Thank you!  I'm curious to know what you did with the big date palm seed.

Amy - Thank you for the compliments.  Let's hope it sells quickly...the realtor paid for the staging and is paying for the monthly rental as well.

Patti,

What a great way to create height in the corner of this room without the expense of an artificial tree and at a very low cost.  I love how you used your creative juices to think of utilizing your neighbors tree clippings.  Great job on your first blog!

Connie and Dawna - Maybe I should look into this new business opportunity.  Connie, if you see this crazy lady wondering around Moorpark loaded down w/ palm fronds....want to do coffee this week?

Michelle - Thank you for your compliments!

LOVE CUTTING BRANCHES AND THINGS FROM THE OUTDOORS. HOSTA LEAVES ARE ALSO AWESOME IN SMALLER VASES. Spray painting branches is something that also looks great. GREAT JOB

Patti, like the other's said, what a great idea. . . .makes me wish we had palm trees here in the PNW!

Patty - Thanks!  Are you the one who is making to staging furniture?  I'd love to know more!

Phyllis - Thanks for the creative tips.  In my own home, I can't wait to copy what I've seen in catalogs which is cutting the fan palm leaves and sticking them in a big vase - perfect for outdoor entertaining...also saw someone use the palm leaves as placemats.

Lori - Thank you, I love natural art!

Roberta - Sorry!  I know we get so spoiled here in So.Calif. - if it's 65, we're all freezing and you can't imagine the driving in the rain - newscasters screaming "storm watch"!  Thank you.

Talk about thinking outside the box, I love them!

It is so cold here the trees have time to grow out leaves the size of a sandwich and then it's fall. I'll have to try to smuggle some of those babies back across the boarder with me this summer when I'm in the States!

Oh man - I want some!

I had a woman offer me about 20 bamboo stocks for free last year. I have painted some of them black, although the paint chips easily because the bamboo is so hard. After seeing them at 4-5 dollars a piece at Pier 1, I'm enjoying them at least as much as you're enjoying your palm leaves!
