The purpose of this blog post is to highlight what a buyer needs to consider when starting to prepare for their move. If you are at this point, then  you deserve hearty congratulations as you made it past some big milestones like finding the perfect home and successfully negotiated the inspection items. Here are some items to consider when planning out the big move to ensure things go as smooth of a process as possible:

  1. Change Over Your Utilities - While water is handled at the closing by the Title Company, the electricity, and gas (if applicable) should be handled by you. As a courtesy to our clients, the Jason Martin Group does offer the ability to change over these services for you at no cost. If you elect to do it yourself, then here is the contact information you need:
    1. Pepco (Electricity) - (202) 833-7500
    2. Washington Gas - (703) 750-1000
    3. Comcast/Fios - Call John at (202) 427-9689 to see what's available in your area
  2. Trash & Recycling - Visit this site to learn more about trash and recycling protocols in the District and this link to look up which days to leave your trash out to be picked up;

  3. Reserving Street Parking -  Parking a normal car in DC can be a huge pain, so imagine how tough it can be to park a truck sometimes! Luckily the District allows for you to reserve street parking around the city to make your move a little bit easier. You can register online by visiting DC's Transit Permitting Website and then you can stop by one of these locations to pick up your signs. You will need to put the signs up 72 hours before your reservation, so plan accordingly

  4. Forwarding Your Mail - About seven days before you move you will need to reach out to USPS to ensure they have all your forwarding details. That can be accomplished in about 5 minutes by visiting this portion of their website.

  5. Physically Moving - At some point all that stuff you've acquired over the years needs to physically make it's way over to your new place. There are two options for this:
    1. Renting a Truck & Recruiting Friends - Normally requires nourishing them with pizza and beer; or
    2. Hiring a Moving Company - Give John Coleman a call at (202) 427-9689 for suggestions that best fit your situation
