How often should a business photo be updated?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with eXp Commercial, Referral Divison RRE-BRO-LIC-75443

How often should a business photo be updated? I think the answer depends on how much the person being photographed has changed.

Earlier this year, I met another real estate professional at a closing. The first thing he said to me was, "You look NOTHING like your photo! I didn't even know who you were!" It was obvious as he said a few more things that he was not complimenting me. He was telling me I looked older than my photo. He insinuated that I should have an updated picture done to reflect the "real" me.

kathleenmoriati_002-web1I didn't bother telling him that he also looked about twenty years older in his photo. I kept that to myself (until now). But the fact was, his comment was just the stimulus. I had been thinking about getting another picture anyway. My first real estate agent photo, shown on the left, was taken right around my 50th birthday. I remember getting my hair done the morning of the photo shoot, and then heading to a photographer. The picture came out wonderfully and I've been using it ever since.

That being said, it's been 6 years since this photo was taken. My 56th birthday is imminent and I certainly do think I look older. Not only that, I earned my Associate Broker license this year so thought I should update the photo to make me look a little more professional. So once again, I scheduled a photo shoot on the same day I got my hair done. At my age, gray hair definitely makes itself known from time to time. I visited my wonderful hairdresser who hid all those pesky grays, and then I drove to my photographer's studio.

Kat pic 1 duplicateThe resulting photo is to the right. You'll notice my only contribution to the professional look are the pearls. That's it! I think if my head had been tilted exactly the same as the picture above, I had been sitting at the same angle and I had done a better job of combing my bangs, I would have looked very similar to the photo above.

So since there is no huge difference (contrary to that other agent's comments), I'm not changing my picture yet. I think I look much friendlier and approachable in the photo above, not this newer photo. I look too formal in the new one. So I'm throwing my plan of a more professional photo in the trash. My new plan is to take a casual photo in front of a mountain or waterfall or some other area where I'm truly "me." And I might be hot and sweaty with a bit of gray hair peeking through. But it would be me.

So the answer to the question of, "How often should a business photo be updated?" is "When it's necessary." Some people might need a new one in just a few years, but some can wait much longer. I'm waiting a little bit longer!

William - Yes, we definitely want people to recognize us!

Jeff - Thank you!

Sybil - Being recognized is the important thing.

Tammy- I've thought about letting my hair go gray, because it would be easier, but then I say, "naaaah". I'm not quite ready. As for the insulting guy, I just laughed. I had no other response!

Kat - I can said honestly that your picture above looks exactly like you.  You have a wider smile in the upper but I like them both.

Yes, I like the old photo better than the new one - because it does look friendlier. As for how you've changed - I don't see that at all!

Kat, giving out unsolicited advice really does win friends, doesn't it?  I think a more casual photo will be great.  Get someone who really digs you to take it. It will be terrific.

Oh, and you don't look a minute older in the second photo than the first one!

I'm told my current face has more character than my professional photo as well as a bit lighter hair color

Grant - Thank you! I think the second smile looks forced. The first one was more natural. I hate posing for photos.

Marte - Thank you! I think I feel the changes more than I see them!

Pat - Thank you for the idea and the compliment! :-)

Ed - I recognized you immediately when I met you in person so I'd say your photo is just fine!

Grant - Thank you! I handed my husband my camera last night on our way out and said, here, take a few shots. One of them was exactly the kind of picture I wanted.

Kat love your new photo and you know what I loved your old photo too, so as far as I am concerned the one that was making all the fuss was a "Jackass" just my two cents... needless to say I look like my dad now but that is OK to me my photo is part of my Branding...Everyone Connects with it on all platforms.... it is not about them it is about me:))Endre

Hi Kat.  Your new photo looks great and it still doesn't look anything like a 56 year old.

Good advice...few photographs are "timeless" ...nothing worse than when there is a decade or more in between shots !

Kat, your old photo is so good, it's going to be hard to top. Your hair color now is lighter in both photos. I've been looking through old photos doing #TBT posts, and my hair has been red, poofy, curly, and occasionally short, but for the most part, the hair style is as you see to the left. The lips are thinner and the eyes are droopier, but they are all ME, and I'm recognizable in every one of them.  My solution to not having to update the business card is to omit the photo altogether.

Larry- I think most people wouldn't need one that soon, but I bet some people do!

Kathy - Thank you!

Pat - Yes, my hair is definitely light; trying to keep the grey away but maybe moving slowly there....  I do like having a photo on the card so people will remember me.
