FAQ Is applying to rent a home a job interview?
We currently have a townhome on the market for rent. There has been a lot of calls and interest in the property. Most people are very cordial and considerate while just a few have this idea we should drop everything and go show the home - like right now.
We scheduled a few showings all within a half hour around dinner time. One guy didn't show up so we called him and let him know we were leaving. He asked us to wait an hour as his boss sent him on another job. Sorry we have other appointments - you will have to reschedule for another day. I also reminded him that that each applicant 18 and over would be required to fill out an application and pay the credit and background check fee. He said it would be himself, his wife and his 30 year old son but they weren't here yet. No worries we can handle everything via email signatures. He said he'd text me later and reschedule.
We agreed to meet the following day at 9:00 am. He showed up on time and loved the place. At first all sounded like it might work out but then an ugly head popped up.
The guy insisted very loudly that only he had to fill out the application as his wife and son weren't here yet. I again said but they will be here in a few weeks, correct? And they'll be living in the home, correct? Well yes he said but that doesn't matter as only my income counts. No sir, that's not how it works. All adults 18 and over must fill out an application and agree to a credit check and background check. That's how it works and I am not able to change the rules. Sorry.
That's when it got even more ugly. He started being belligerent and nasty towards me and the way I conducted business. My husband who was in the car on a conference call stepped out and just stared at him as he knew I wouldn't back down or give into his rant. He continued his rant in the driveway and then said that all the agents in town were just like me, unwilling to do it ********* way etc. It was unbelievable and of course we knew he didn't have a chance in he** of renting this home. I'm sure the neighbors got a good look at him and wondered what the heck was going on too. Yikes - it's one of those very quiet & serene neighborhoods! He continued to rant as we locked up the doors tight and I again said - sorry sir we must follow the rules. He got in his car and speed off in a big huff.
We both looked at each other and said well that was interesting......
For a job interview that didn't go so well for that applicant!
Folks if you're applying to rent a home it is like a job interview and you do have to fill out paperwork as well as have a credit and back ground check done.
