FAQ Is applying to rent a home a job interview?

We currently have a townhome on the market for rent.  There has been a lot of calls and interest in the property.  Most people are very cordial and considerate while just a few have this idea we should drop everything and go show the home - like right now.

We scheduled a few showings all within a half hour around dinner time.  One guy didn't show up so we called him and let him know we were leaving.  He asked us to wait an hour as his boss sent him on another job.  Sorry we have other appointments - you will have to reschedule for another day.  I also reminded him that that each applicant 18 and over would be required to fill out an application and pay the credit and background check fee.  He said it would be himself, his wife and his 30 year old son but they weren't here yet. No worries we can handle everything via email signatures. He said he'd text me later and reschedule.

We agreed to meet the following day at 9:00 am.  He showed up on time and loved the place.  At first all sounded like it might work out but then an ugly head popped up.

The guy  insisted very loudly that only he had to fill out the application as his wife and son weren't here yet.  I again said but they will be here in a few weeks, correct? And they'll be living in the home, correct? Well yes he said but that doesn't matter as only my income counts. No sir, that's not how it works.  All adults 18 and over must fill out an application and agree to a credit check and background check. That's how it works and I am not able to change the rules. Sorry.

That's when it got even more ugly.  He started being belligerent and nasty towards me and the way I conducted business. My husband who was in the car on a conference call stepped out and just stared at him as he knew I wouldn't back down or give into his rant. He continued his rant in the driveway and then said that all the agents  in town were just like me, unwilling to do it ********* way etc. It was unbelievable and of course we knew he didn't have a chance in he** of renting this home.  I'm sure the neighbors got a good look at him and wondered what the heck was going on too. Yikes - it's one of those very quiet & serene neighborhoods!  He continued to rant as we locked up the doors tight and  I again said - sorry sir we must follow the rules.  He got in his car and speed off in a big huff.

We both looked at each other and said well that was interesting......

For a job interview that didn't go so well for that applicant!

Folks if you're applying to rent a home it is like a job interview and you do have to fill out paperwork as well as have a credit and back ground check done.

You don't deserve that Anna Banana Kruchten !  Some people just don't get it. Renting a house is just like going for a job interview. (I am shaking my head in disbelief)! OH! and rolling my eyes also!

Sheri Sperry - MCNE thankfully we don't run into Idgets like this one!  I shake it off in a heartbeat as it has nothing to do with me.

Anna,

No doubt this guy had something to hide.  Obviously, he is the right person for the townhome.  I am sure the perfect tenant will come along.  Enjoy the weekend.  A

Hi Anna - We ended our stint as landlords last Wednesday, and it's encounters like this that I'm going to miss the least - they're worse than 3am plumbing problems.

Dick bravo on ending your landlord days!  3 am plumbing in theh dead of winter would be NO FUN.

It's not like we live in the dark ages.  I'm sure she could fill out an application and scan it back.  Or fill one out online.  Huge red flag that he's using her distance as a reason for her NOT to fill out an application.

Oh boy!  Belligerance is one of those ugly signs that a business relationship isn't going to go well.  Like the lyrics from the movie, Frozen. . ."Let it go.  . .Let it go!"

Myrl - yes let it go on the spot. You just can't fix stupid.

Anna, We must play by the rules ... unless we find someone willing to play and bend the rules or ignore them altogether.

Kathleen that's what he was hoping for I am sure AND making it known all Phoenix agents are the same - bad.

With a nut like that, I think a copy of the Driver's License, an application fee, background check, photo session, and fingerprinting are in order with a big immediate rejection in payment for his rude behavior and discourteous behavior - all of this done at the Police Station of course!

Patricia it was odd......for sure and then some!

Wow - what a story.

We've encountered would-be renters who think they're entitled to rent the home just because they want it, as if it were a gallon of milk.

Just not as simple as buying milk!!
