Multnomah Falls

Multnomah Falls is located right off I 84 about 20 miles east of Portland in Multnomah County. Multnomah Falls is the second highest year round waterfall in the United States at 620 feet. It is Oregon's number one public destination and has close to 2 million visitors each year. Multnomah Falls is fed by underground springs from Larch Mountain. The water flowing over the falls varies somewhat but is usually the highest during spring and winter.

The Multnomah Falls Lodge was built in 1925 and is on the National Historic Registry. Inside the lodge you will find a USDA Forest Service Information Center, snack bar, and gift shop in the lower level. A restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner is in the upper portion of the lodge. The Benson Bridge was crafted by Italian stone masons and allows visitors to cross between the lower and upper falls. Simon Benson was a prominent businessman and the owner of the falls the time the Benson Bridge was erected. Before the bridge was built, a log bridge was in its place. Benson gave the 300 acre site to the City of Portland. In 1943, ownership of the site and lodge was transferred to the USDA Forest Service.

Wow Amy:  That is simply breathtaking.  I visited Portland in late 1999 for seven weeks.  I wish I had gone to visit this beautiful piece of heaven.  Thanks so much for sharing it with us.  Take care...
