New Airline Baggage Fees Go Into Effect Monday May 5, 2008

Watching our local news tonight there was a reminder of the new fees that are to go into effect on Monday for 5 of the major airline carriers. This will have many people thinking twice about booking their next flight.

The following airlines will adopt the new guidelines on Monday:

  1. Continental
  2. Delta
  3. Northwest
  4. United
  5. U.S. Air.

Starting on Monday it can become VERY expensive tocheck your bags on these airlines. You can expect to pay $25 for your 2nd bag. If you have even more bags to check, you canexpect to pay additional fees. Your 3rd bag would cost you an additional $100. So for example if you are checking in 3 bags you can expect to pay $125 inaddition to your air fare. This is for bags that are 50lbs or less. Now just think about this.... You go over by just 1lb and you could expect to pay $100 over weight fee for your first bag, $125 for your 2nd bag over 50lbs and a wopping $200 for the 3rd bag.

You think this is bad..... Now checking in for your return flight home. Ouch ! You get to pay these fees once again. This will make even me think twice about flying these days. With 2 children, this can become very expensive to travel. This could lighten your bags when going on your next vacation. But wait... What do you do when you arrive and don't have what you need. Now you must purchase these things and them be subject to the over limit and over weight fees on the return trip.

Now there are 3 Exeptions to this new policy:

  1. first-class passengers,
  2. some frequent flyer members
  3. Military Men and Women "with orders."

For now these airlines have opted out of this new fees:

  1. American
  2. Southwest

This is not good to hear.  Some trips 2 bags is hard depending where you are going and who you are visiting. Bummer.

I fly Continental about 4 times a year to Alaska and I always take 2 bags because I am usually going for 3-4 weeks. I guess I will have to look at taking one as a carry on even though I hate taking carry-ons.

Jo: The airlines are going to raise prices and many may elect not to fly or change carriers.
