Positive Attitude is No Secret. Are we hurting our Real Estate Business?

Do you know the Secret? Of course you do! Could you be hurting your own Real Estate business?

Such is written in our very own Ethics of Realtors.

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".

The world wants you to understand that you can create your own reality. If your thinking is based on negative thought then you will be creating negative energy and everything and everyone around you will react in a negative way. Envy begets envy and distrust begets distrust.

Likewise, a positive attitude will deter negativity.

Being positive can turn a negative attitude around completely. I believe that positive thinking, a positive attitude, a bright outlook and a sunny disposition are great ways to think and be...BUT,

I also believe that ACTION must accompany the attitude.

If we all just sat on our laurels and thought "sales thoughts", the unfortunate truth is that we would positively be run into the poor house. Just remember what mom and dad taught us. They taught us to "work smart, not hard". But, they encouraged us to work.

"See your glass as half full instead of half empty." But you must work to provide the glass and the water to fill it. "We never know the wealth of water till the well is dry." We must work to keep the water flowing.

" You see things and you say, "why? But, I dream things and I say, "why not?" George Bernard Shaw.

Thomas Jefferson wrote, "I'm a great believer of luck, and the more I work, the more I have of it."

Debra A Brooks wrote, "Make them go away!! But,,,,ONLY for today."

A positive attitude is a secret to many successes in life.  Good post.

Negativity rubs off on others, so does the positive. I would much rather be in the positive. Nice post.

05/03/2008 01:34 PM by Patrick Lambert (Century 21 All Islands)

Yep! Even when someone is nasty towards me, I still smile and 99% of the time, I have them soften up. You attract more with honey than vinegar.

05/03/2008 01:37 PM by LaNita Cates (REMAX of Joliet)

Absolutely.  I'm the most positive person around.  My friends have accused me of being manic and predict the depression will eventually come.  I disagree.  I suspect it's in the genes.

I'm very happy as are all of my children.  It's in the genes.

Helps sell real estate too.  When we aren't burdened with negative attitudes, we can be problem solvers.

Maria, Attitude attributes so much more than we realize. I have to work to keep my head in the right "frame" sometimes. It always helps to do so.

Patrick, I love being around positive people. Their attitude affects me so much!

LaNita, I need to learn your patience. I need to just keep smiling! Thanks for that!

Deb - Great reminders, without a positive outlook it is impossible to move forward.  And it is also true that a  positive oulook must be backed up with action.

05/03/2008 01:42 PM by Jennifer Fivelsdal, Rhinebeck NY (Keller Williams Realty)

I really like a positive attitude and you have just said it very well.  Thank you for being so positive and the post.  I like you use of the quotes as well.  I have not been a member of AR for more than a month and I realized that, now that I have found a voice, I can stand alongside friends and family to assist them in looking and acting more positive about everything we encounter.  I have recently been able to see just what being positive can feel like through 2 closings that were given 0% of getting past the financing.  Love you smile and attitude.  Thanks.

05/03/2008 01:43 PM by L. Wayne Denton I HAVE A HANDLE ON YOUR MARKET! ! ! ( Magnolia Signature Homes)

Lenn, you are so right! I remember my first sale ever in this business. I worked many hours and drove many miles only to have them pull the deal one hour before closing...my broker made them mad...yet, I still marched in to his office and said, "don't worry, I'll sell it again."

The next week I did. That attitude taught me a lot!

I enjoy your attitude, and wisdom! Later in the rain~Deb

Optimism is one of the most valuable tools I have.  I always assume positive intent and give people the benefit of the doubt.  It has paid off so many times.  Positive outlook does go hand in hand with willingness to work.

05/03/2008 01:50 PM by Brenda Carus (Re/Max Towne Square Realty)

Well thank you L. Wayne Denton! Welcome to AR! I can tell by your "I have a Handle on your market" statement that you certainly do! I like the announcement. If I were looking in your area you are the one I would call!

Way to go getting those closings done. Sounds like a post to me. Tell us how you did it! Email me when you get it done...I don't want to miss it!

Brenda, you are so right about it being a tool! People want to live up to your expectations! If you don't give them the benefit of the doubt they will usually dissappoint you! Thanks for the comment.

An excellent post.  Your attitude determines your altitude.  So as a man thinketh so is he.  I believe that your life follows the words that you speak.  Of of course you have to be doing something to receive something.  Thanks for this encouraging post.

Howdy Deb

Just like our Mom's would say when we where kid's, If you can't say something good, then don't say anything at all.

It's good if folk's take the time to, clarify their values by thinking about one of their best days. How did their values help to make them feel the satisfaction they received on that day in their life.

Have a good one Dale

Hey Deb: Can't have an attitude with out a thought and can't have a behavior without a belief, thought and attitude. No matter what we think or believe....there always has to be an action to make it work!  Good thing to point out....can't run around being all happy and "expect" things to fall in our lap or be given to us :) One thing is for sure...there are more to a person than just a smile :)

Hope you're having a wonderful day!

Hi Sally! What you say is the natural procession of being. You are soooo right. I have noticed that if I wake up on the wrong side of the bed and allow it to affect me it'll follow me the whole day. At least until I change my outlook. Once I change my own outlook the world changes! Hummm.

Vicki, have you ever been around the type of person that absolutely drains you? We had an agent in our office once that was mad at the world. Everything was wrong with the office, the air conditioner, the phones, the traffic, the leads and I could so go on but I won't. Their attitude towards the world is so negative that it makes your stomach turn? I don't ever want to be unhappy let alone that unhappy! Smiling is easy. Thanks for stopping by!

In general being positive is better. Unless you are working with the reigning king or queen of negativity. Then your positiveness makes them crazy!

05/03/2008 10:33 PM by Christy Powers - Pooler, Savannah Real Estate Agent (Keller Williams Coastal Area Partners)

Hi Debra,

You are so right.  I've always found it much easier to be in a good mood than a bad one.  I figured out many years ago that the saying "if Mama ain't happy, no one is happy" was so very true.  As a Mom, I set the tone for the attitude of the home every day.  That holds true for our "empty nest" now, or just interaction with others.  Thanks for the reminder.  Bet those Huntsville magnolias will be blooming soon.

05/03/2008 10:37 PM by Eileen Liles - Cedaredge and Delta Co Colorado Homes and Real Estate (Prudential Colorado Real Estate)

Debra, the power of positive of thinking - it's so true.  It can make a world of difference to you and those around you. As I see it, there's just no other way. It is a choice that we have to make and the only choice when wanting to make a difference.

05/03/2008 11:19 PM by Lynn Pineda - Realtor in and around Coral Springs Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty)

Trey, don't they (whoever they are) say that you make your own luck? I'm sure that's what Thomas Jefferson was talking about! I hope you're doing well Trey! Stay lucky!

Thank you dear Scott. I hope your saw is a bit sharper too.

Hello Jennifer! Like attracts like! Better be good!

Christy, it sounds like you're working with someone that is trying to bring you down. Don't let them!

Eileen, I don't like the empty nest syndrome. We have to fill our lives with something of quality and nothing is as good as raising our children! The magnolias are getting ready! The honeysuckle is already out. It's just wonderful here.

Lynn, I do believe that happiness is a choice. Only we can allow another person to affect our feelings and attitude. Later in the rain~Deb

05/03/2008 11:30 PM by Deb at Brooks Prime Properties

Deb - Great post about having a Positive Attitude! Only ourselves can choose what we really want and choose how we want to feel. Most will say it is this persons fault for me feeling this way, but in all honesty it is not. It is our OWN fault for allowing them to let us feel that way.

I actually just seen the movie "The Secret" and the secret is nothing but positive thinking...."As a Man thinketh So is He....so in short if you stay positive, positive things will happen..stay negative and of course negative things happen.

05/04/2008 12:24 AM by Justin Williams - Loan Officer (Prosperity Mortgage)

You're right Justin! Each of us have the power within our personalities and attitudes to shape our world. I have yet to see the movie but again, this is not a new concept. It is followed back for centuries.

Why do we seem to forget? I'm not sure. Daily affirmations are good to stay on top of it. I tend to forget myself. Yet, I know I have the ability to have a good day or a bad day. It's all up to me.

Thanks for stopping by and you have a wonderful Sunday, Justin! Keep the attitude1

Debra...

You probably know what I'm going to say but ... I'll say it anyway :)

I don't "let" other people spill their negative crap on me. I refuse...Yes refuse...To allow others to bring me down.

Anytime I catch myself being effected by something negative I remind myself that I've already made the decision to refuse :)

I toss it out of my life because I only have one life and it's not subject to things that will bring me down :)

P.S. I'm one of those people who does not believe in victims or pity parties either :)

Debra~ This is so true, and its unbelievable how easy it is to get negative. But negativity can create a downward spiral of more negativity which is not NOT fun..life is too short to not focus on the POSITIVES!!

05/04/2008 12:05 PM by Laura Monroe- Real Estate Virtual Assistant (Creative Agent Solutions.com)

Hi Debra,

I agree with you!  The Golden Rule is about blessing others.  If we are loving, kind and encouraging to others, we will be blessed.

Why not dare to dream and then strategize how we can make the dream come true?

As we learn to live freely and lightly, we become loving and safe people!

05/04/2008 12:45 PM by Dan Woodworth * Encouraging Communicator (The Connection)

A positivie attitude is awesome to have...but, if you do not act on it, it really is just wishful thinking.  Positive thinking with positive action to match is what will bring about positive results.

05/04/2008 12:48 PM by Clint Miller - www.recr.com (Real Estate Client Referrals LLC)

You've heard the expression, you are what you eat, well, you are what you think too and others are what you think of them - being positive feels so much better than the alternative and there is something good in every trial that we encounter and we can hurt ourselvs and those around us by our negativity and sometimes I have to kick myself for being negative.  Great post and reminder for me.  Thanks

05/04/2008 01:37 PM by Sondra Sheckler Realtor,ABR,SRES,Historic Home Specialst (Coldwell Banker, Award Of Excellence & Million $$ Producer)

Laura, Yes, I would rather be climbing a "positive" ladder instead of a downward spiral staircase! It may take more effort to climb rather than being dragged down but life is so worth it!

Dan, we should all remember this. I like what you said...live freely and lightly.

Clint, wishful thinking is good to but like your said it has to be backed up with action!

Sondra, Please don't kick yourself...(smile)...just pat yourself on the back for recognizing the negative and acknowledge it. With that you can change the way you're thinking.

Have a great day! Later in the rain~Deb

DEB - Great quotes, and words to live by.  I know that when The Secret came out, many people believed that they could sit around wishing for things without taking any action.  Thomas Jefferson sums up why this is not the case with his quote.

05/04/2008 06:46 PM by Adam Waldman - Long Island REALTORĀ® (RE/MAX Best)

Truer words were never spoken! In our market I am so tired of hearing Realtors respond negatively when they are asked ,"How is the market? The market is what it is and there are buyers and sellers out there! You just have to find them. Everyday the media trashes our business and we certainly don't need to re-enforce it! Our market has been in the tank for 26 months and you know who has survived? The positive agents who have worked it everyday! Sure it is not what it was, however your positive attitude will not allow you to fail!

Something I learned a long time ago, ATTITUDE and ACTION, the two keys to success!

Hi Deb...I believe that if you really enjoy working in real estate it is easier to have a positive attitude about it.  Perhaps there really isn't any correlation between the two but then again there might be.

Nice feature!

I have a paper posted in my office that I read every day about attitude...long story short...our attitude is affected by 10% of the things that happen to us and 90% how we handle the 10% that happens to us. It is so true and has helped me maintain an upbeat positive attitude even on days where I don't feel it....I also choose not to associate being around the negative people.
