Is Your Spouse In the Marketing House?

 ringa

If your spouse isn't your number one advocate to his/her SOI you may be losing a ton of business.  I'm a full time realtor and my wife has a job apart from real estate.  She is aligned with many organizations outside of work that I'm not really connected to (i.e. Girl Scouts).  Today I received two phone calls from women that found me through the internet.  Both of them needed help with real estate; one as a buyer and one as a seller.  The first question they asked me was if I was Meredith's husband and the answer is -- yes. They both said they had no idea her husband was in real estate and they jokingly said they would chastise her for not telling them.

My question is how do you reach out to your spouses SOI in a manner that is not too threatening in order to becone the real estate expert of choice within the spouses SOI?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Tim,

Spouses should work their SOI for us like we do..everyone is interested in what is going on in the real estate market if you start a conversation...

my spouse did it so well that he has been working in my brokerage for the last 3 years (after a 23 year career in a corporate job).......

Julie,

Thanks for the thoughts and encouragement.  Sometime's it doesn't occur to my wife to conduct these types of conversations and I know I could  grow my business rapidly by plugging into her SOI.

In my opinion our spouses should be our biggest fans!! Their encouragement, support and accolades of our work to others is the best compliment to our business...it should just come natural to them!

Tim,

I attend every event my wife has business wise.....social networking inside her SOI is critical.   After she set's the table about mewith them, meeting them face to face makes the next very important contact that solidifies what she has alread told them.....More time that fills my schedule, yet invaluable when it comes to keeping me in their minds.

Misty- My spouse is my number one fan but she does a ton of volunteer work and the opportunity does not always present itself for her to shamelessly promote me as the best realtor in town.  She cetainly supports and encourages me though.

Dan - I admire you for the ability to attend all of your wife's events and I wish I had that opportunity but with work (60-70 hours a week in peak season), my volunteer organizations, my kids activities, and dealing with parents and in-laws, it is impossiblt for me to attend many of my wifes events (particularly volunteer).

Do you try to get e-mail lists from her SOI and contact them with a database management system?

Tim, my husband is my biggest fan and supporter. He helps me all the time.

Tim,

While I try to make most, as you know our industry makes that impossible.  The point I was trying to make was that making time for her events broadens my base by making the personal contact after she has given them her take on how I may assist them.

Bev also attend the bigger KW events as her line of work could benefit KW as well.

Dan- Good idea to have her attend the KW events as it will also help my wife's business in doing so.  Do you obtain e-mail addy's and drip them?
