Carmel-by-the-Sea is planning a full day of events on October 29 to celebrate it's 100ths birthday. If you haven't made your plans yet to come, now is a good time.
The day's activities start with a parade through the business district. Although through the years, there has been a parade on Carmel-by-the-Sea's birthday, it always had a Halloween motif. Even dogs got into the act with spooky costumes.
But not this year, this year Upbeat Parade Productions, well known in California and Nevada, has been hired to coordinate the whole affair. According to the organizers, the parade lineup is set in stone, including float sponsors and local organizations and schools set to walk in the event. There will also be four bands including the United States Navy Band from San Diego and the Monterey Pipe Band. I understand the Grand Marshall will be Clint Eastwood on the Wells Fargo stagecoach, but don't quote me on that. And, yes, I will be there to take THAT photo.
After the parade, there will be a huge luncheon at Sunset Center for 500 people. Sorry, tickets sold out within hours of going on the market--well, at City Hall.
THE BIG FREE EVENT 'DANCING THROUGH THE DECADES' - 5 pm to 8 pm.
This big event on Dolores Street between Ocean Avenue and 7th--and just down the street from my office--will probably be overflowing with party animals (yes, probably some dogs too). I can't believe that this won't be the party of the century here in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Why, you say? Well, Carmel-by-the-Sea is known as kind of a quiet town which only recently allowed live music at its restaurants. Nightclubs? Forget about it.
Anyway, THE MONEY BAND will be playing 1950s music to dance by while several restaurants from that stretch of the street will be providing food and beverages (but NOT FREE including beer and wine for those 21 and over). Restaurants are Little Napoli, La Bicyclette and Cantinetta Luca--and I highly recommend each one.
