The 72nd annual Floresville Peanut Festival is coming the second weekend in October.  That week of October 4-8th, 2016 will be filled with the normal Floresville Peanut Festival Events.    Floresville is part of the South Texas area and is about 20 miles southeast of San Antonio in Wilson County.   The Floresville Peanut Festival was started in 1938 to celebrate one of the main crops raised in the area.  Sadly that crop has declined in production and is no longer a focal crop of the area but it was for many, many years.

The festivities kick off with the Goober games on Tuesday evening.  Kids cover the courthouse grounds moving from one activity to another.   The games are manned by many of the local organizations.  Games are played and food sold.  The food vendors are simple with things such as pickles, chips, sodas and snacks for the kiddos.   The games vary each year but have games such as sack races, egg races, peanut toss, "fishing" for prizes, Face painting and a bouncy house.  Each person purchases tickets to use for each activity.   $0.25 ticket or $5 armband.

Thursday night has the Coronation of the Queen Tuneap and King Reboog of the Festival during an elaborate ceremony .  They are chosen from the seniors of Floresville High School.   The participants in the Coronation are from Floresville High School and represent the local clubs and then have visitors from the surrounding cities.   The Queen’s float is always a sight to behold and the unveiling of the elaborate gown and train of the Queen is always a highlight. The gorgeous gowns of the court, with their long, flowing trains, are designed by local designers and constructed by friends, family, and/or professional seamstresses with a different theme each year.  Tunaep is peanut backwards and Reboog is goober backwards.  Can you tell this was started many years ago?   Former Gov. John Connally was the first King Reboog.

The carnival kicks off the weekend festivities. The Carnival is on the south side of the courthouse square.   Thursday is  5-11 pm with armbands for $20;  Friday is 5-11 pm with armbands for $20;  Saturday is 10 am -11pm with armbands for $25.

Friday night features a Street Dance featuring local talent.  La Naturaleza - 7:00 pm, Baraja de Oro - 8:45 pm, David Lee Garza y Los Musicales - 10:30 pm.  The vendors line the courthouse square selling their homemade items, toys and food booths line the area where you can get all types of hand held festival food from tacos to sausage wraps, turkey legs, cotton candy and HEB Creamy Creations Floresville Tin Roof Sundae ice cream on Friday from 5 pm to midnight and Saturday from 9 am to 1 am .

Saturday is the big party starting with the  Floresville Peanut Festival Parade at 10:00 a.m.  The Saturdaymorning parade is a mile long with pretty girls, floats,  cars,     the Shriners, bands, and the military floats from San Antonio with horses bring up the rear.

The day's activities also include the Mechanical Bull rides, South Texas gunslingers, Wilson County Car Club display,  Washer Tournament, annual raffle, peanut brittle on display,  arts and crafts vendors by the library, various musical and dance groups, local talent and stages of  entertainment around the courthouse square on the northern side and  carnival on the southern side -- fun activities for the whole family to enjoy.   See attached schedule. Tours of the Wilson County Historical Jailhouse Museum are available. Peanut products such as peanut brittle, homemade peanut butter, peanut cookies, roasted peanuts (shelled and salted), pies and ice cream are all available to satisfy your peanut palate.

HEB always commemorates the occasion by doing

Creamy Creations Floresville Tin Roof  Sundae ice cream.
