Who wants to leave their comfort zone and purposely try something that might not bring them any pleasure?  I know I don't, but I know I need to.  There' a big difference between want and need.  We do what we're comfortable doing including reading on Active Rain.

 Putting a blog together

A little over a week ago I was talking to Bobby Carroll of DAKNO Marketing about creating a Blog for me that I could link to my websites, but that could also stand alone.  Bobby told me they used Word Press, and me, the smart one didn't want another template.  I got stuck with one for my primary website, and didn't want another template that I didn't like.  So, what did I do?  I came to Active Rain....to my own e-PRO Group and started looking.

I knew Cheryl Johnson had written many things on Word Press.  I almost always feature them because they are tech oriented, but they never meant much to me.....I didn't have an outside blog :)  Anyway, while reading one of her Posts, I saw she had posted in a Word Press group......OK click....go check that out.

The Word Press Group had several Posts that I started reading.  I learned quite a bit, and actually went searching after that for a blog that I liked the look of.  One that felt right for me.  I also set my own up, just to try it of course :)  And hey, it's pretty easy........now to the Header.

Ahh, the Header.  I know what I want....I wanted to use one of my old Posts as the framework for the new Blog. Would it be all Real Estate, no......OK, that's an SEO nightmare.  But that's OK....as long as I know what I want the Blog for.....well maybe :(

Now,  back to the Header......and do I want a 2 column, or a 3?  Plug-ins...will they ruin my computer? I'm old school...don't download anything you don't know about.  Heck....yes, this can be OK to do my own Blog, and yes, I can do it myself....I really am quite capable when I put my mind to something....but will it be what I want?  Nope :)

OK, forget the header, just let Bobby and Brad build it.......then I can go back to my safety zone for awhile, and enjoy what I do best.  It's the same as selling houses......anyone should be able to fill in a contract after some research....but that's just one small piece of the puzzle......what about the rest of it......leave it to the experts, and save a lot of frustration :) :)

OK, going back to my comfort Zone now.....and maybe in a week I'll be able to show you my new Professional Blog.....designed by DAKNO Marketing while I am sitting outside watching the birds on this nice Spring Day :)

*** Tip....be very careful what you want to name your outside blog.....a group linked to a militant group had the name I wanted LOL :)

I had Dakno build my personal blog and am pleased. Only thing is when I want to add a new plug in I don't know how. I know I can download an ftp program but that scares me, and I had to have them update me to WP2.5 too. WP is a learning curve so get ready. Their design work is great, and he added everything I asked, but now I want more. Call me and we  can be the blind leading the blind.

My other blog is posted using iThemes on the wordpress platform. I have my own domain name and the site is hosted through BlueHost.com. They have seamless interaction with the wordpress plaform. iThemes has several templates that are basically the programming framework. You can change the graphics. They have "how-to" videos and great customer support.

Kathy,

I try not to dwell or think too much about SEO...I just experiment and then go back and track which articles people are drawn to. I believe the consumer uses search words that aren't always the common ones and that's when we get added exposure. It must be working because my links get picked up.

Missy- Oh no don't tell me that....I want to wake up write my posts, and click submit.  Nobody said anything about a learning curve....oh my this tech stuff just keeps getting more fun by the day :)  I just might call you...blind leading the blind that should be fun :) :)   And I am still laughing at your comment of now "I want more"  isn'[t that so typical....we learn one thing now we have to have the next one that is better :)

Vickie-I haven'ty heard of them, but I will check those out too.....mostly for curiosity sake as I am committed to DAKNO......

Neal-Thank you my friend.....that's what I said...if the SEO works, fine, if not that's fine too :)

Sally-Thank you...after our conversation on blogs, and after you helped me set one up on bloglog...someone wrote about that not giving us the right "juice" since it would be going to the platform.  My this stuff can get complicated :)  You keep inspiring me to stay motivated, so for this I thank you :)  And you do know that this stuff is WAY out of my comfort zone...LOL :)

Hi Kathy,
The Comfort Zone is so....ah......comfortable.   I really do not enjoy leaving it for the scary, unknown!  I'll be watching to see what you do.  :0)

05/03/2008 06:14 PM by Cynthia Tilghman, Realtor® Onslow County NC Home Specialist (Kingsbridge Realty, Inc)

Kathy, Congratulations, it's difficult to step out of our own zones.  I have an outside blog but I've neglected it for so long...lately there hasn't been much computer time (which I guess is a good thing!).  I'd love to see what you create.

05/03/2008 07:19 PM by Carole Provenzale Owner, Feng Shui Long Island & New York (Feng Shui Long Island & New York City)

Hi Ann- Wow it's been awhile since I've been to Flagstaff (your Blog) but also a while since I've been physically there :)  Thanks for your comment.....I miss seeing you, my fault I know.  How all's well with Judy and the kids......

Pam-Sally helped me set up one, but I couldn't put that one where I wanted it, and I want my own URL so I guess I will try the DAKNO route.....free is great don't get me wrong, it fits my budget just right, but sometimes we just have to do something different.  Yea, come back in a week and let's see what both of us have accomplished.....

Cynthia- I just love you :)  You almost always make me smile ........

Carole-Ditto to Cynthia's comment, and my absolute favorite smiles are when the two of you comment one after another :)  Hope all is well, aren't you doing something at your old Feng Shui Institute?

Hi Kathy,

What I need is a blog tutor!  When I start reading about SEO and widgets and headers and long tails and .....I just seem to glaze over.....You guys that write the great blogs and keep up with all you do just boggles my mind.

05/03/2008 10:01 PM by Eileen Liles - Cedaredge and Delta Co Colorado Homes and Real Estate (Prudential Colorado Real Estate)

Eileen....let me say Welcome, and believe me it all gets clearer with Time :)  You would laugh at our first Posts, and all those acronyms.....hey one day at a time.  A Blog Tutor....it will all come, just be yourself, write respectfully (my opinion) and know who you are writing to.....then you'll be fine.  Are you in the Positive Attitudes for the Weary Soul Group?  That one doesn't have all those widgets, tails and stuff and Sally is great with new people :)

Kathy, I am working on an another blog right now.  It is on wordpress. I only investigated a few places.  If I give myself too many choices, trouble will be on the horizon.  LOL  Not so sure what the heck is going on, but studying and trying to get it going.  I think I will just blog and let the chips fall where they may.  All the super technical stuff makes my head hurt.

05/03/2008 10:18 PM by Audrey June-Forshey, GRI, Gaithersburg, MD (RE/MAX Realty Group)

Audrey.....hey I understand....techie stuff uck :)  Let me know when you get yours going...what's the name of it?

05/03/2008 10:25 PM by Kathy McGraw ~ Calif Broker (CELLing Realty)

I just bought MovinMaryland.com?  What do you think of that name?  It is still being worked on.  I will shoot it over to you to see and get your input.  I decided on a 2 column, just because I think it looks cleaner?  JMHO?

05/03/2008 10:31 PM by Audrey June-Forshey, GRI, Gaithersburg, MD (RE/MAX Realty Group)

Yea, send it and let me see.....I am going with the 2 column also. Was MovintoMaryland, or Movin2Maryland gone?  I'm not good with Domain names....takes me a while to get something I like :)  Hey are you going to write something for the Appreciation Contest??????  Only 2 entries at this moment...kinda sad for the amount of people we have here .......

05/03/2008 11:19 PM by Kathy McGraw ~ Calif Broker (CELLing Realty)

A militant group? Might be good for the real estate market you are in now, it has been taking you hostage the last year or so, so why not fight back?

05/04/2008 12:13 AM by Todd Clark (Realtor), GRI (Washington Co, Beaverton Oregon) (Kastings & Associates, Beaverton Oregon Real Estate)

Todd as tempting as that sounds from your rationalization, I must say I didn't like the company I would be keeping (saw a few of the names).  I have to say I don't know how you come up with your one liners , consistently :)  Have a good night :)

05/04/2008 12:16 AM by Kathy McGraw ~ Calif Broker (CELLing Realty)

Kathy, I am back . . .  I did buy MovintoMaryland also, didn't think of Movin2maryland?  Maybe I should double check that.  I will send it over for you to see as soon as it is up.  Yes, I need to write my appreciation post.  Wow, if there are only two there I might have a shot?  LOL!!  I am sure more folks will submit.  Procrastination ya know. . .   I have two appointments today.  I am blessed, luckily I have been busy for the last couple of months.  Not sure if the money is there, but the folks are keeping busy!!!

05/04/2008 09:06 AM by Audrey June-Forshey, GRI, Gaithersburg, MD (RE/MAX Realty Group)

Audrey.....one thing I noticed with my company name CELLing Realty is I thought it was a great play on words....I thought.  But what I didn't take into consideration was how many people can't spell, and they pronounce it ceiling.......so my question:  Is there a reason you are leaving the "g" out of moving....and if someone else already has that Domain.....won;t you lose business in the long run for people spelling the word the "normal" way?  Just curious....and cdan't wait to see what you come up with on the Blog :)

Oh, and please don't procrastinate too long on that contest entry I am going to have a heart attack.....a party with no one coming syndrome :) :)

05/04/2008 11:37 AM by Kathy McGraw ~ Calif Broker (CELLing Realty)

Kathy I really think I'm tech savvy enough to figure this out but darn if I can get the time.  I guess I'll just have to hire someone to do it for me on the basis of lack of time.

Kathy, I just played neighborhood softball, and worked earlier today.  We did't win, but it was close.  We played the New York Yankees, at least they think so?  Well you are right about leaving the g out?  Someone else owns the one with the g, but it is a dead site?

Damn, what was I thinking about getting those names without discussing it with you first?  LOL.  Okay, fur sure I will get a post to you tomorrow.  I have had two beers after the game and I am useless at this point.  I have time in the am to do it!!  Ima comin to your party.  I will bring the beer :)

05/04/2008 07:36 PM by Audrey June-Forshey, GRI, Gaithersburg, MD (RE/MAX Realty Group)

All right....a party, and even if your team didn't win...sounds like a great time....:)  You're pretty funny on the names.....:)  Waiting for your entry tomorrow :)  Tonight enjoy life........I know I am :)

Ok Kathy-I'm getting out of my comfort zone-slowly I might add-but I'm getting there!

05/04/2008 08:54 PM by Terry Ledford-Your Ga. Mountain Realtor (EXIT Realty Mountain Properties)

Hi Terry- Anytime we get out of our comfort zone something happens.  Just by being on Active Rain you can find all kinds of things to try, and many different ways to look at things....tons of different opinions :)  Just by being here you have taken the first steps of getting out of your comfort zone.  Welcome Terry, and thanks for taking the time to comment :)

Kathy, ahh, the dreaded comfort zone that we all like to settle in. It happens in life, in business and in real estate selling. That's why there is a vast majority that don't or wont try something new that may help their business or better yet the customer. It's the agent that steps out of the zone who will stand out in the crowd. So many are stilling selling real estate as our great, great grandfathers had. Good post.

Duane-I saw this at my very first Brokerage.  Not knowing any better I thought everyone worked that way, but once I learned there was no controlling me......had to become a Broker just to get out of the Box .....LOL :)

Monika- Oh thank you as this morning I was concerned again about it :)
