Just How Many Cards Do YOU Hand Out at a Networking Function?
Are business cards passe? When you attend a networking function, do you
make sure that every pocket is filled with business cards?
Years ago when I joined our local Chamber of Commerce, a seasoned member told me...don’t go around handing out your card to any and everyone you meet.
She suggested that if you meet just 5 people and learn what they do and how you might benefit from each other's services, you'll be more effective.
Shortly after that, I attended a Tri-County Chamber event where there were a few hundred attendees. I may have handed out 10 cards and came home with the same amount.
However, I got to know a couple who were both agents. We met for coffee later to learn more about how we could help each other and we’ve been working together for eight years.
Recently I read an article about “Why I Only Carry One Business Card.” And it made some sense. It doesn’t matter if they have his contact information, what matter is that he has theirs.
When he attends a function, he hands his card to the first person he meets. Then when he meets someone he wants to have a further business discussion with, he says “I gave out my last card” he pulls out his phone and asks for their contact information.
This puts the ball in his court for further contact.
Some may prefer to use digital means of transferring information that is on a business card.
So, just how many cards do you pass out at a networking function?
