Oakland A's

The Oakland A's had a cool promotion on Thursday  (May 1,2008) night.  The game was in Anaheim against the California, Los Angles, So Cal, Disneyland, Angels of Anaheim.  For every hit the A's got that night the ticket price for a select group of seats at Sundays game against the Rangers would drop one dollar.

So what did the A's do?   They proceeded to go out and rack up 20 hits.  So  those $24 dollar second deck tickets were now $4.  With ticket prices that low I could probably afford a second beer at the game.   So a few minutes after the game ended I got on the A's website and tried to purchase some of those tickets.   Well as you might guess it was pretty much impossible to get through to purchase the tickets.  I tried for about a half hour and kept getting the server is busy try again later message.

LA Angels

I tried again Friday morning but the seats they were offering by then were way out in center field.  On Friday nights broadcast of the game , Ray Fosse talked about what had happened with the tickets.  The A's had set aside 2500 seats for the promotion, never thinking in thier wildest dreams in a game against the Angels they would get 20 hits.  Those first 2500 seats sold out in 20 minutes.  They released two more sections of seats and ended up selling a total of 7300 seats at the $4 price.

I dont know if Oakland is the first team to do this or not, has anyone else heard of a team doing that?  If not , I suspect that you may see this promotion coming to a team near you.

That's a pretty cool promotion. Did you end up getting tickets?

Jim - No I did not get tickets.  I already have tickets to see Rush in concert that night so I wasnt too dissapointed that I didnt get A's tickets.  Thanks for taking the time to read my blog.

I'm glad the Mariners are not running that promotion... geez we would be paying extra!

That's a great way to get the fans to come back a 2nd time. The seats that were sold most likely would of not been sold and the extra revenue and concession sales are a bonus. Much less the goodwill generated towards the fans.

Best,

Scott

Scott - It looks like it worked well for the A's.  I don't think they were expecting them to get 20 hits though, especially against the Angels.  Thanks for the comment.

Hi Jim - My husband go wind of this promotion as well and we did get to go see the game. We were able to be part of the first 10,000 to arrive and got our free jerseys as well. About 31,000 people were there as well. It was a great day as the A's beat the Rangers. Wish you all could have been there.A's game

I got a chance to pick up 2 tickets to this game.  I got through around midnight by clicking and clicking and clicking that "continue" button.  Finally after about 75 clicks I got row 1, section 205.  My wife had already bought me tickets for Saturday, so we made a weekend of it and got to see 2 really good games, especially Sundays!  We got the promo hats on Sat but missed out on Campy's jersey.  Oh well, for $4 you can't beat front row on the second deck.

Terrie - Thanks for the comment.  Great pictures too.  Did you really drive all the way from Reno for the game?

Adam -  So you are the reason I couldnt get through for tickets.  I did catch some of Sundays game on TV before I headed out with my son to see Rush at the Concord Pavillion.

We try to go to a few games a year. Either the Giants or the A's. So when they have a fun promotion going on, we can't refuse. And we do dry there in back on the say day. It only takes 3.5 hrs to get to either stadium if we leave early enough. Going home always takes longer because of traffic. The kids usually sleep so it is ok. But we always have a blast so the drive is well worth it. Thanks

You should do what I do, Jim, and open six browser windows, setting each to search within 10 seconds of each other. It's a war zone these days, scoring tix to anything -- darn near impossible to get good seats.

If the multiple browser window doesn't pay off, then I go for the premium seats, and just keep clicking over and over until the seats I want come up. I'm getting too old to rush the stage these days. :)

Speaking of Rush, I'm envious. Generally I have to go to the city to see anybody worthwhile seeing.

Elizabeth - I will have to try that next time.  There were plenty of the regular price tickets available but I wanted those cheap $4 tickets.  I guess thats what I get for being cheap.  The Rush concert was awesome, those old guys can still rock.  I took my 16 year old son with me, he loved it too.  In the last year and a half I have taken him to see The Rolling Stones, VanHalen and Rush, have to teach him the finer things in life.
