Q. How does Pennsylvania’s property taxes compare to other states?

 

A. According to research by CoreLogic, the average median property tax rate across the nation is 1.31%. That means a home owner with a home valued at $200,000, on average, pays an annual amount of $2,620 in property taxes.

 

Illinois has the highest median property tax rate at 2.67% while Hawaii has the lowest at 0.31%. Pennsylvania comes in 7th worst in the nation at 2.09%.

 

The top 10 states with the highest property taxes are:

  1. Illinois – 2.67%
  2.  New York – 2.53%
  3.  New Hampshire – 2.40%
  4.  New Jersey – 2.37%
  5.  Texas – 2.17%
  6.  Connecticut – 2.10%
  7.  Pennsylvania – 2.09%
  8.  Vermont – 1.98%
  9.  Nebraska – 1.96%
  10.  Wisconsin – 1.95%

 

The 10 states with the lowest property taxes include:

  1.  Hawaii – 0.31%
  2.  South Dakota – 0.38%
  3.  Alabama – 0.54%
  4.  Wyoming – 0.65%
  5.  Colorado – 0.66%
  6.  District of Columbia – 0.69%
  7.  South Carolina – 0.71%
  8.  West Virginia – 0.72%
  9.  Louisiana – 0.74
  10.  Utah – 0.75%

 

Property taxes are often offset by sales and income taxes. The five states with the highest average combined state and local sales tax rates are Tennessee (9.46%), Arkansas (9.30%), Louisiana (9.01%), Alabama (8.97%), and Washington (8.90%). Meanwhile, Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon enjoy having no sales tax.

 

The states with the highest income taxes are California (13.3%), Hawaii (11.0%), Oregon (9.9%), Minnesota (9.85%), Iowa (8.98%), and New Jersey (8.97%). Meanwhile, Wyoming, Washington, Texas, South Dakota, Nevada, Florida, and Alaska enjoy having no income tax.
