I walked to Starbucks!

By
Industry Observer

Yes, I did it... I walked to Starbucks this morning... and I will admit I felt like a bit of a freak doing it.

A couple of years ago I sold my house and moved to a condo in the Uptown/Turtle Creek section of Dallas.  I was tired of the responsibilities that a house brought with it and longed for a less personally responsible lifestyle like I had when I lived in my co-op in New York City a few years prior.  I missed the urbanism (which does not exist in Dallas) and decide that Uptown was close enough and that I would see how I liked it.  For over two years now though, while I do not miss mowing grass or pruning trees or treating fire ant mounds, something else was missing...  it was the lack of freedom from the car.

Dallas is a car city.  We drive EVERYWHERE... whether we need to or not, and what I have discovered lately is that there are a lot more times that I don't need to drive that I do simply out of habit.  Within a half mile of the front door of my building there are restaurants, supermarkets, bookstores, coffee shops, bars and parks... and I have driven to all of them.  I have wasted gasoline, avoided passive exercise and just been generally lazy.   Hi, my name is Steve and I am a car-aholic!

The ironic thing that I learned on my 4 block walk to Starbucks  today is that people in Dallas don't know what to make of a person walking on the streets who is not clearly en route from a car to a store or vice versa.  The looks I got from people in their cars as I walked along Oak Lawn Avenue this morning seemed to imply things like "Hey, where's your car? Don't you own one?" or "What's that strange back and forth motion you are making with your legs to propel you?"

And to those people I answer "It's called walking.  Get used to it because my $4.00 coffee at Starbucks tasted a whole lot better knowing that it wasn't a $4.50 cup of coffee when I factor in the $3.80/gallon cost of gasoline it usually includes to get to and from Starbucks!"

Are you looking to save gasoline by moving and cutting down your reliance on a car?  As gasoline prices rise, the savings by reducing your reliance on gasoline for commuting, getting out in the evenings or just being able to walk to Starbucks for your morning coffee could make owning your own home Uptown, Downtown, Addison Circle, Victory Park or other area with easy access to DART Rail or other public transportation more financially rewarding than ever!  Contact me today and let me help you explore the home ownership options that make the most sense for your personal lifestyle needs!

I am looking for a house at the moment and one of the things I am looking for is something close to work where I can bike to work.  It has to be a bike friendly road without to many hills.   I am tired of driving everywhere I want to go somewhere.

Hi Steve,

When spring finally arrived in St. Albert I vowed to walk and ride my bike for often. Like so many cities, ours is a driving city as well, and I hope everyone who reads your blog will take your cue and discover that old fashioned thing we did eons ago when we were kids, and WALK.

I have to get this out of shape body walking some more.   Trouble is our coffee shop (much better than yours:-) also is great for ice cream....   sort of defeats the walk.  But I need to do it anyways. I would love not to be so dependent on a car!   I loved being in Europe - walking and using public transport.

Steve,

I guess my clients are ahead of the trend. They have been requesting houses in walking neighborhoods for almost 10 years now. Keep it going, maybe more of your neighbors will join you.

Justin: Thanks!  It's all good... there's not a drawback to it (unless you trip and fall, but I won't go there)!

Kevin:  Biking is good too!  I thought about walking to work, but my office is a bit far and the Texas summer heat would leave me "glistening" by the time I got there!

Hi Gabriele:  It's funny... when we were kids we would walk places that were miles away.  As adults we lose the common sense that tells us it is a good thing to do (at least occasionally) because we get caught up in the inconveniences of walking versus driving, but as I get back into walking (I just walked to/from brunch) I find it's not that bad or inconvenient at all.  It just takes a little bit of planning!

Steve...I, too, am a car-aholic. But I kind of need to be (most of the time), because I like in Oklahoma McKinney. :)

Hey Anthony... I will definitely checkout WalkScore... and I will try to remember the reusable mug... I hadn't considered that. (although how much water do I waste having to wash it?)

Hi Kim... I'd offer to meet you for a coffee and chat in Oklahoma McKinney sometime, but I get a nose bleed once I get north of Frisco! :)  Seriously though, thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Amusing post.  Yes...from what I understand, Texas is a car (truck) state.  Most of us can't imagine walking any where other than to the parking lot.  Good post.

Hi Sondra.  Thanks for the comments!  You made me realize that we are less a car state than a Truck and SUV state.  Cars are small and as you are probably aware, we like things big here in Texas!  :)

Hi Patrick:  Thanks for commenting.  Yeah, the Texas summer heat is definitely a factor/consideration.  I guess the trade off is that in the winter we do not need to wear so many layers to walk most places. :)
