Simple Kindness Goes a Long Way

Today, while waiting in my favorite grocery store for a prescription to be filled, I was given a pager and set adrift to browse.  I had done my grocery shopping just yesterday, so I was in need of absolutely nothing.  This store also has a food court.  Unfortunately, I also just eaten.

What I did do was make it to the seasonal aisle.  Slowly walking down the aisle of Halloween decorations I was admiring things I would never buy.  And then I came to the table top stuff, which is usually seasonally themed plates and mugs.  So pretty.  I made eye contact with a fellow browswer who seemed shocked when I spoke to her.  "They always have so many tempting items here.  I love browsing."  The pace of life in Northern Virginia is such that we will often find that eye contact and a smile are rare, no less actually speaking to someone.  This is something I do not like about this area.  It's changed as I've grown up to be far less friendly in the stranger exchanges department.  I like to buck the current system and talk to people.

Well, apparently my fellow shopper felt the same.  The two of us chatted it up over the seasonal plates.  She seemed a lonely woman and mentioned she lived alone, meaning she didn't need to buy a set of dishes, just enough for her.  It's amazing how much I learned about her in such a short time.  Her mother passed in October, which made enjoying her favorite season more of a challenge. She had survived what really should have been an unsurvivable accident and here she was, years later talking to a stranger about it in the grocery store.  I encouraged her to treat herself to something that caught her eye since she was a walking miracle.

We both left smiling.  She made my day when she said, "You are a lovely woman."  Shoot.  I need to engage strangers in conversation more often.  That was really nice to hear, and I'm not even ashamed to say it.

Who have you talked to recently in a situation where you normally wouldn't?  Step out of your comfort zone if you haven't done it.  It feels good to connect with another human and share a smile.

Hi Chris Ann Cleland - What a wonderful story!  I have noticed that I am more at ease around strangers when I am away from my normal environment such as vacation. Maybe it is because we are all away from our normal environment that makes being friendly easier.  I need to do more of that on my home turf.  Thanks for sharing.

I love your story, Chris Ann. My belief is that most people feel isolated in their community, and the fast-paced life doesn't lend itself to a chat. You did a great job in breaking that, leaving both of you feeling happier and more connected. Nice!

Hi Chris Ann, this post gave me a feeling of hope...hope and faith in humanity. In world of gadgets and keyboards, there are people out there who love to have that human touch, you did that today.
I just came home from a listing appointment, this was just to get the papers signed and place a yard so it should've taken about thirty minutes, I was there for three hours talking to the wife as her husband went out for a run. We connected on a deep level first time I met her. I think things happen for a reason, some of us have our eyes and ears open and fortunate to see those opportunities. Thank you for sharing!

Chris Ann, isn't that wonderful! I try to make conversation, usually it is in the grocery store at the check out isle. Making someones day is often as easy as a smile, opening a door, complementing someone while you are standing next to them. Me? I have often remarked while watching them put really good stuff on the checkout belt... can I come to your house for dinner? Always gets a smile! But.. curiously, never an invitation...

Chris Ann Cleland  I smile and talk to people all the time . Sometimes I find miserable people who find it difficult to even smile .Makes me sad .  Today I had a nice conversation with a lady in the Super Market . We ended our conversation with a smile and wished each other a nice rest of the day .

Girl, I live in the deep south, there are NO situations where I would not normally talk to people.  And since I was a small girl my mama says I've never met a stranger.

Oh, Chris Ann, now THIS is what more people need to write AND read about. I absolutely LOVED this post--completely open, honest and so very human in its compassion. Gee, I think you had a Forrest Gump moment!!!!! I can't thank you enough. I grew up with a family who spoke to everybody, no matter where or what the situation was. No one was a stranger. You allowed this woman to open up, something that changed her life a bit! And she in turn spoke from her heart, reflecting back to you the kind of warmth that you genuinely emanated.

Good for you, an angelic moment, too!!

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

As you know, I talk to people everywhere, much to the chagrin of my husband sometimes. Especially when you're sharing the same experience, like standing in a store or sitting next to a person at the theatre. My husband thinks I am too social, and I really am not. I am more of an introvert and like to be alone. Doesn't mean I don't talk to strangers, though, because I do. Surely don't get that from being raised in the north.
