Go to nice houses built in our area in the 70's and 80's and you're quite likely to find a fireplace in each one of them. Strangely, in our area, real site-built fireplaces have just about gone the way of wallpaper. No one seems to covet them anymore.
Back then we had a fireplace insert factory in Searcy AR! Ebay right now has a manual for sale to show how to install and operate them. They were inserted into the fireplace and you could put wood into the insert two times a day and they would heat the house all over. If you did not have a fireplace or if the fireplace was too small they had free standing ones with names like King Bee, Queen Bee and Honey Bee.
We had one in our house! That insert worked fine. All Hubby had to do was go chop wood and keep it loaded! When we built a new house at the end of the 80's we had another fireplace with an insert. However, we were taught the value of heat pumps and excellent insulation and we quickly found that we had a comfortable house without his having to cut that firewood. Guess what? That insert has barely been used!
I had almost forgotten the factory. It closed but if you Sleuths remember anything that you'd like to share about it, tell us. The factory was at 2000 Hastings, Searcy AR.
