Autumn Adventure in Amherst, MA
Summit of Mt. Norwottuck
New England gleams in autumn, and this past weekend some friends and I spent the day in Amherst, MA. We first took a hike up Mt. Nortwottuck, a mountain located in the Mt. Holyoke Range. We started at the Notch Visitors Center and took a 3.5 mile loop on the Robert Frost and Metacomt-Mattabessett trails, a moderate hike with elevation of about 1000 feet - not too strenuous.
Horse Caves
This route took us through a glorious rock overhang called Horse Caves, where we squeezed through this notch on the way to the summit.
Once at the top of Mt. Norwottuck, we spent time daydreaming and chatting with other hikers.
Our hike took us about 2 hours at a leisurely pace, including numerous stops for views. We picked up the pace on the way back to the car, though, because we had planned to have lunch in Amherst. We enjoyed burritos and tostadas at La Veracruzana, which offered this wonderful salsa bar and college-student prices.

These are but three of the highlights of a hike and a meal in Amherst, MA. This college town is bursting with hip, artsy, nature-rich, and historic places to explore. One day simply is not enough: Make plans to spend a weekend getaway.
