Fhoto Friday - Now You See Them...Now You Don't!

We have a family of 6 deer that routinely visit in the tree save area behind our home. It seems that wherever Barney (the dog) is in the house, he hears these deer, goes crazy and runs as fast as he can to get outside and to the fence!  Whether or not the deer are afraid of Barney (which I'm sure they're not!), they make a quick and graceful exit from his sight.  He sits and pouts, hoping for their return, I'm sure but, then soon gives up and comes back inside!  This happens at least once a day and sometimes only one deer will be BARELY visible to us and Barney knows that deer is in HIS backyard!

Deer & Barney

The photo on the left is of the deer, just as they hear Barney coming.  The second one is Barney standing by the fence, awaiting for them to return - which they never do while he's standing there waiting!

I live smack-dab in the middle of the city and never expected our lot to be so 'exposed' to nature.  We are so fortunate to be able to enjoy the natural habitat that we do - right in our own backyard.

Good morning Debe Maxwell ,

I think so too, Dorie!  Duke (our other dog), just sits and watches him - he could care less about the deer!

Hi Debe.  Does Barney want to play with the deer or eat them?

LOL  Probably just sniff them!

Debe Maxwell It is sad when I see natural habitat 'stolen' by man, just so more subdivisions get built. Definitely cause for reflection.

I agree!  Our city is very conscious of that as well and the area behind our house (actually our property) is a tree-save area. We cannot develop it at all, nor remove any trees without the permission of the city (basically, they have to be dead or a threat to a nearby structure).

I love that it keeps the natural habitat in the city too!  We also have a red fox family that we're not too keen about having back there but, they leave us alone and believe me, we leave them alone too!

Debe, there are so many deer in our subdivision that a meeting was held to see what can be done... don't want to kill them but would like to see them transfer to the mountains.  My sister-in-law who is visiting this weekend took her dog for a short walk and said she saw six deer and they had gray coats.  Usually, we have 12 or more in the yard. The coats turn in the fall.

WOW!  We definitely don't have that problem here.  Very interesting and I never thought that it would be a problem but, I see that it can become one!

Even after years of finding deer in our backyard at our former home, our family still got excited upon seeing them, Debe Maxwell.  Our Maggie seemed to know minutes before they appeared that they were in the area.

Don't you wish as a human we had that inate "sense" or ability to know when viable clients were in our midst???  Amazing!

OMG your Barney looks exactly like my little Barney!  And he does the same thing in our backyard....except we don't have any deer, but rather other desert animals.  Drives him crazy and he absolutely has to race outside and stir up trouble with his 'buddies'.

Debe, Charlotte seems to be like Los Angeles, having lived in Marina Del Rey for about eight years and now two years in Westchester next to LAX you would think there is no way wildlife could be in such a metropolitan area....well we have and do see Raccoons, Possum, Hawks, Rabbits and we know that Coyotes are around just to name a few...Endre

This one was taken when we were building!  We have a hawk family that lives in one of the trees behind us.  So, needless to say, we can't let our cat outdoors or they would have her for lunch!

Hi Debe - that is one part of the natural habitat that can get in the way.  And especially now you don't see them but now you do in the roadway.

Oct 03, 2016 05:13 AM
Debe Maxwell, CRS

We rarely see them in the roads here but, do as we get closer to the mountains in NC when we're traveling.  You really have to be careful of them - they've totalled many cars in those areas!

Debe I was just down in Charlotte visiting my son and his family and when I returned our yard had been devastated by our local dear, everything eatable and something which are not supposed to be eatable was munched on. But, when you a cute little fawn one still goes aww!
