I was absent from AR much of last week because I was part of a neighborhood group of 400+ homeowners that were opposed to this large building project that is slated to go into our area.  Imagine a house with a nice open living room, and you tell the sellers to cram as much stuff inside to the ceiling as possible and that it will actually be BETTER than what they had before!  That is what this project is like - 5 stories, 54 units per acre!  There is nothing like it in our region.  The City of Roseville wants to build an urban condo and retail center right in the heart of my neighborhood.  This is a great project - there are many of them in the U.S. - but this project belongs in a city center, not surrounded by thousands of houses away from any major employers, no transportation, and no retail.

There we were, crammed in the City Council chambers to say our peace.  Only allotted 30 minutes, 6 key speakers presented the information on behalf of our group and I sat listening to each present valid arguments against moving forward (I was the behind the scenes communicator for the group).  You know I was so disappointed because the council members did not listen to one thing shared with them - and read their prepared speeches at the end.  It was evident to me that the people's voice did not matter - the builder's pockets did.  The people heading up the opposition invested hundreds of hours of researching documents that had some serious flaws and raising important questions, but in the end, none of it mattered.  And so engrossed in the hope that we could make a difference, I was so disappointed when not one city council member stopped to think and wait for more answers.

It was a moment of pure disillusionment for me.

That idealistic part of me that thinks everything is going to be fair, still exists.

The good side - It sure made me thankful for what I do as a Stager!  Where my voice is heard - and people do listen - our clients listen.  And they pay US for our expertise - and we are HELPING them!!  And when we share from our expertise and ideas to help them, they are grateful. Gosh it is so much easier!  When we prepare a report or advise on a vacant house, people actually do what we say (well, most of the time :-)) . . . and we really do make a difference in how the house sells, how much money the seller keeps, how much the Realtor earns, and how a buyer finds a home.

That is pure joy!!

Civic pride aside - I'll stay as as Stager, thank you.  - Jennie

I went through something similar years ago. They wanted to build a highway behind our subdivsion...in the end, our voices didn't matter one bit. I feel your pain. On the bright side...:)at least it isn't a highway....it was unbearable noise when the highway went in and we ended up moving.   Welcome back...I missed seeing you here this week...:)

Hi Teresa,

You are right - at least it is NOT a freeway - I am reminded of the old adage - "There are always people that are better off than you, and those that are not as well off as you" - whether a life circumstance, health issue, business, or like you wrote above, a building project.  Thanks for sharing with me.  I don't want to move - and yet if it comes to that, we will.  Most of the neighbors really like our community.  That is really what I think upsets me the most - thinking that we will lose that because of this project. - Jennie :)

Jennie,

Sometimes the people on the city's planning & zoning board are also developers and real estate investors. The deck is stacked before any council meeting is even scheduled!

It is amazing - here we think we live in a democracy where people can actually change the tide with their collective voices.  I know there are some wonderful examples of this happening in some situations, but I hear more and more the opposite - where one person or entity with the money is the one that wins. - Jennie

Hi Jennie!  Don't be discouraged - One small voice, and one small step - stay involved.  It is hard - but the payoff is worth it.  Sorry I did not see this until now (April 7).  Wishing you and your wonderful family a terrific Easter!  Margaret

Hey there Jennie!  I feel your pain.  I grew up in Granite Bay before it became "Granite Hollywood".  We used to be a very rural area acccented by the beautiful Folsom Lake. It was peaceful and a long ways out of town.  I used to go out and gather rocks for our wall where you live now.  Growth is hard, especially when it impacts our living area.  I just can't imagine that going in over where you live right now.

All the best and Happy Easter,

Lori

Jennie,

Hang in there and keep your voices heard.  Even if the project goes through, you can still make a big difference in how it's finalized.  The developers really do have to listen to the community and so does the city council.....even if they won't admit it now.  So don't give up because no doubt your strong voice will be necessary as this project moves forward, to keep them on track with the neighborhood's concerns.  You're such a great spokesperson for whatever group you're aligned with -- so good luck and keep at it!
