Let There Be [Eco-Friendly] Light!

Energy saving LED light bulbFor many years now, we have heard the benefits of switching from the standard, incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs (also known as CFLs).  The reasons are simple, but speak to our pocketbook as well as our sense of morals - save money and save the Earth.

Great!  Excellent!  We have been using them in our home for years, with varied success (great indoors, not so great outdoors).  I have not calculated the cost savings, but I believe the countless entities that have evaluated these energy saving devices can't all be wrong.

But what if I told you CFLs are old news?  What if I told you that there was something better?

"Wait!" you may be saying.  "But I haven't even converted to CFLs, and now you are telling me that I'm too late?"  Well, not too late - you just have another option now:

LED light bulbs.

Yep, LED light bulbs.  I found out about LED light bulbs a few months ago when my husband told me about them.  LED light bulbs use significantly less energy than incandescent light bulbs, with a 13 watt LED light bulb being equivalent to a 100 watt incandescent.  The LED light bulb also produces more light than CFLs of the same wattage.

But the most interesting attribute of LED light bulbs is their lifetime - 50,000 hours, which is more than a decade of use and five times longer than CFLs.  So even though the LED light bulb is more expensive than CFLs (around $80), the cost savings come from their long lifetime.

Other significant attributes of the LED light bulb is that it does not contain any mercury, and they are more significantly more durable, resisting shattering if dropped, and they never get too hot to touch.

Hasn't there ALWAYS been ECO-FRIENDLY light?  Didn't we used to call it the SUN?  Haha! Seriously though LED bulbs are great but there are some potential problems down the road with disposal.

WOW, Tiffany.  Those are some big differences.  Especially the cost to purchase.  OUCH!

I hadn't heard about this technology yet.  No doubt prices will come down a lot as it gains traction.

LED lights are great alternatives. And provide more in terms of styles. But they are costly now and prohibit consumers from making the jump. I am still a proponent of CFL's and recommend them to all my clients, friends, and family.

Great post!  I also like these more than CFL's because the light quality is better, in my opinion.

Since we all have to get used to the idea of not being able to get incandesents after 2010 (above 40 watt) it is nice to have a couple of alternatives. I have switched to LED flashlights---nothing like them.

Tiffany,

Great post, to give people more information about all light bulbs. My bolg Lighting Bulb and fixture types goes into great detail about each designed use.
