A successful real estate carreer is more about life and serving the needs of others than it is about deals.  All too often in real estate the needs of the Realtors are placed before their clients.  Instead of referring to our homeowners or first time homebuyers, it is very common in real estate to hear them referred to as "sides" "units" or deals!"  How impersonal can you get?  Buyers and sellers are referred to as units of production for your income, as opposed to individuals with needs.  Over the years we've assisted families and clients buy their first home when getting married, or to sell a home when being transferred to another town across the country with their job. For those relocating to our area we are able to enlighten them to schools, and neighborhoods that suit their needs.  We also assisted others with job losses, financial setbacks, illness, cancer, AIDS, foreclosures, relocation, the loss of a spouse or child and more.   We  help others wiht our knoweldge in getting through very stressful or difficult times.  Personally, we feel it is truly a gift from God that we were chosen and were able to assist all that have crossed out path.  It is a very rewarding feeling to be of assistance when needed.  To aid someone it has to start with telling the truth.  It is not about scripts, and closing techniques...that is too manipulative.  It is about providing all the information need and more.  It is about providing the right price to list a home, and substantiate your reasoning and results with DATA.   It isn't about winning a listing and placing my sign in the ground, or selling a home that is offering a bigger bonus to myself.  It is about serving the needs of our clients first, and doing the best job possible.  If we accomplish this, success and fortune follow.

Absolutely you are right. I always put myself in my buyers shoes. Before I was a realtor and my husband and I bought a house, we had a horrible experience which ended with us being in an Extended Stay Hotel for 2 weeks and no one seemed to care....I always remember that and make a point of caring.

Really well said.  Thank you.  You prove out the responsibilities of listening to your client who many times, if you have done your service to them, become more than just a client.  Some might become an aquaintence, some if you are lucky become like a neighbor, some, hopefully, become a referral source, but I think the best is when they might become a friend.  Thank you for the reminders and the knowledge of who directs our lives.

Oh, I don't know.  I know agents who love their job and think they are helping, but couldn't generate enough business to stay in business.  They want to help, but don't know how.

I'll have to go with the experienced agent who uses their experience and skill to get the job done.

Jim,

When I started as an agent selling real estate, a LO solicited our office for referrals...he was a nice guy, but he always referred to a house as 'a piece'...his 'inside' jargon never impressed me...in fact, it totally turned me off!!! Thanks,   Fran

I work only with buyers and definately am in the business of providing solutions -- including some good old family mediation skills.  It is very time consuming, but buyers appreciate the time and they refer other to me and that is the best complement I can wish for.

Jim,

All too often we forget what is the most important task in this business, whether real estate or mortgage. We often get too hung up on our goals and procedures and neglect to truly service the individual needs of our customers. Good reminder.

Jim, I agree with you.  Sometimes its not always about a pay check but if you are excel in the people business you can be successful.  I met a really nice lady while out in town one day.  She was looking to rent a place for her son.  I helped her with the rental.  No I don't get paid on rentals but guess what.  She sent me two buyer referrals after it was all over.  That's not why I was helping it was just an added bonus!!

Steve Hoffacker  I think the trainers that lead the industry today adn in the late 90's made the selling process an impersonal mechanical script!  Sales became a manipulation of wants instead of needs.

Huntsville Alabama Real Estate Agent, Kimberly Grant  We never know where the payoff will be!  I have referred out low end deals only to have the referral buy a mansion!  "if we are trustworthy with small things...!"

Jim - Thanks for such a meaningful post.  I agree so wholeheartedly.  We need to keep in mind the people involved in the process.  Their needs and situations will drive the decisions they make - and we'd better be able to understand their motivation for buying or selling. I'm sure your clients appreciate the care you bring to each experience.
