School Overview
A.J. Whittenburg Elementary is the only elementary school in Greenville County School District with school-wide engineering curriculum. The school was established in 2010 and currently houses 562 students from 4K to 5th Grade. It is the most technologically advanced elementary school in Greenville County, the students use tablet in school while teachers use iPad as instructional resource. A.J. Whittenburg features outstanding programs including engineer partner program with local organizations such as Michelin, Fluor, GE Energy etc., LEGO Robotics team, Green team, Challenge Program for Gifted and Talented students, Mentoring program, Afterschool program, Coder club, and more.
Since it’s opening, the school has been recognized for its outstanding commitment in providing education to its students. The school is recipient to many awards some include Palmetto Gold Recognition of Student Achievement, Silver LEED certified facility – the first school in the Upstate to receive this honor. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is based on use of the structure to teach students the importance of recycling, water conservation, and renewable resources. The school is in partnership with the Salvation Armys Kroc Center. Students go to the Kroc Center for lessons in swimming, golf and other popular sports, and after school programs/summer camps..
School facilities at A.J. Whittenburg include three-story facility designed to facilitate collaborative learning and the engineering curriculum, SMART Table Lab, outdoor classroom and extensive organic vegetable garden, Electric Keyboarding Lab, Green Roof, Student-designed playground and more.
