Welcome to Baker Home Inspection Blog! You really want to have a Home Inspedtion

Knowledge is the Power for Your Freedom to a Worry Free Home!

A chimney is not the same as a flue.

Your chimney is the visible outside structure made of block, brick, rock or slate. The flue is the internal vent shaft that vents the gases and smoke produced from the fire to the outside of your home. The terms liner and flue are normally used interchangeably, although the flue is technically the air space inside the liner.

It's the flue or liner that must be unbroken from the heat source, it may be a woodstove, oil burner or a fireplace. If it's broken or cracked, the gases and flames can breach the flue and get inside the home.

2 Comments on What's the Difference between a Chimney and a Flue? First Time Home Buyer's!

Hey Dale - I'm the first one here. You just reminded me I need to check our fireplace. We didn't have much of a winter but I know it needs a good cleaning. Your posting sure is a good reminder for the consumer to have their chimney cleaned and checked. Don't wait until winter, do it on the off season.

Good Blog my friend.

Howdy Carl

my good friend

I am glad you got to be the first to comment on this one.

Your friendship means a lot to me.

Having your chimney cleaned and checked right after winter is really a very good time to do it. That way it's still fresh on your mind.

Thank ya Carl

Have a good one Dale
