Well,

I've been in PA for just over 5 day's now and I cannot believe how may homes are for sale in my parent's township. My parent's built there home before I was born and have lived there since.  They have continuously remodeled and updated the home and it's lovely and I enjoy being here.  HOWEVER,

I was shocked to drive around my old neighborhood and see just how many homes here in PA are for sale. Perhap's it's because in Florida, there are sky high condo's, very little land, and a different terrain than here in PA.

Just within 4 blocks of my parent's home (there are about 4 homes per block with about 1/2 acre of land with each home), 50% are for sale.  Many are for sale due to the age of the owner's other's due to relocations.

One good thing is that the neighborhood is in fine condition.  The owner's have kept their homes in great shape and the recent sales prices are quite adequate for this neighborhood.  I'm amazed how friendly everyone is, new and old neighbor's.

My parent's (if they were to sell their home today) would make a profit of 225% on a resale.  Not a bad investment.

Great lesson learned here....I knew the market was bad all over MOST of the US, but to be familiar with a different area than I usually sell and to see all the for sale sign's right "in my old own back yard" - was, well, sad, to say the least...fond memories, from the past, you know they won't last, but you remember when it was - well a "blast"!

When you go home, how do you view your old neighborhood, or your parent's current neighborhood?

I agree with you.  In the media, you seem to hear quite a bit about FL, Nevada and CA.  (I do however think we are a bit better than the FL market - at least in my area).  We're still seeing just a "squeak" of appreciation in most areas. But that doesn't meen we don't have lots of homes for sale that's for sure.  I think it's pretty similar in most areas.  The Spring Market seems to be starting pretty well and I think we'll have a "decent" but not fantastic year.

Our Commercial Market (the majority of my work) is doing very well and new construction is doing equally well in the commercial markets as well.

Hope your market in FL recovers as well.  I personally feel we'll need the rest of 2008 and the 1st / 2nd quarter of '09 to finally level out.

Hope you're having fun in PA.

Yes it is always to see what is happening in some other community other than our own - to gain a better perspective.

Brian,

Home to take care of family.  Enjoyed seeing all the remaining neighbor's and friends.

I've been looking towards Commercial RE, as I see it going better than other area's right now.

People see the interest rate down another quarter point and think that directly affect's their buying power immediately...and the call's started coming again...along with their "rebate" check's from the government...now we just have to explain that they need more than $600. to buy a home.  Sigh~~~

Bob & Carolin,

It just amazed me...I've been all over my old township visiting the parent's of my high school friends and high school friends, etc.  My son sell's RE about an hour away from my parent's home and has been telling me that he's listing and listing and listing....I couldn't believe it until I saw it!  He did call me today and told me he has a few new buyers :-) yeah!

Thanks for posting!

Karen, Hope all is going well on your trip home. I may be flying home for a short visit to see my mom. She started her cancer treatments last thursday and I feel I just need to see her, although thus far she said she is just feeling really tired from it. I do love to see my old neighborhood as well. Everyone has no less than a one acre tract where they are in Washington (state) and everyone is so friendly and courteous. They genuinely care about each other as neighbors, not like they A-holes I have to deal with here everyday in Ohio. I'm sick of the horribly rude drivers here and when I go home I can actually breathe!!! The air is so fresh and clean and everything is so beautiful and green. I miss it terribly and can hardly wait until my work here is done so I can move back permenantly. The real estate market there is not doing good at all either, typical as to how our economy is right now. Lots of homes for sale. Mostly in the city limits, not so many outside. Still lots of farmers there struggling to hang on after they had that devastating flood last year. Times are tough everywhere. My brother lives in Las Vegas. He would love to move back to WA but has a custom built luxury home (built in 2006) and has tried to sell but with the current market, he would take a huge loss so he is hanging in there hoping things pick up soon. Enjoy the time you are spending with your family, they are lucky to have you. :-)

NJ,

I considered moving back to PA for a "brief moment" but my heart has always been in south Florida. My parent's love to come visit there...Dad is doing pretty well all things considered right now. Hope your Mother is OK too!

Karen, You are right about Florida, it's beautiful year round. I've only been there once on a two week vacation. Stayed at a friends' vacation home in Kissimee and my heart was there if only for a brief vacation. Ha, long story! My is goal to finish up my work here in Ohio to go back home to WA, stay awhile then eventually settling in Maui. I've been about a dozen times now and I can't think of a more beautiful and relaxing place to retire (young)!!!! Maybe just get a part-time job doing whatever. At least then I'd be closer to the West coast. My son (28) and single wants that as well and in his line of work, (surveyor) there is always work wherever you go. We are going to try to fly there around Nov/Dec this year and check out our options. You take care. Glad to hear your Dad is doing well.
