When I first moved to Washington back in the 1970's (I'm dating myself here), it was to take a job working for Ralph Nader harassing the airline industry and their regulators. And our offices were in several different buildings around Dupont Circle, which at the time was one of those "emerging" neighborhoods.
Now, Ralph was quite famous for his frugality. And he lived close to his offices in a boarding house on the corner of 19th Street and Riggs Place. Somehow, that fact leaked out, and in any books or articles written about this consumer advocate, they mentioned his modest digs, as well as the landlady who was afraid to raise his rent.
At the front door of this large corner house, there was a metal box, and if we had to drop of any drafts of reports or regulatory filings after normal working hours, they went into the box. And I always wondered what on earth the place looked like inside.
Well, Ralph Nader's old boarding house is a little different these days, having been totally restored since the 70's. It is currently on the market for $3,250,000.
There are currently 15 townhouses for sale in the Dupont Circle neighborhood, and they range in price from a high of $5.5 million to a low of $1,090,000. And some of them even have celebrity appeal - you never know who you'll find live there during these old places' long histories.
