Where Are the Most New Residents of Charlotte Coming From?

A lot of people are opting for the charm of the Queen City over the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple.

A LawnStarter analysis of U.S. Census Bureau estimates for 2009-13 shows the New York City, NY, metro area sent an average of 6,428 new residents per year to the Charlotte, NC, metro area. The Big Apple topped the list of the 15 metro areas that supplied the most new Charlotte residents during that period. The Census Bureau released the 2009-13 data in 2015.

Interestingly, eight out of the 15 cities on the list come from either North Carolina or South Carolina with Chicago being the only non-East Coast city on the list.

Why New York City?

With New York City topping the list, we naturally had to ask why this is the case. For starters, Charlotte is the second largest banking headquarters outside New York City. Thanks to the likes of Bank of America, Wells Fargo and MetLife, there are enough finance-related jobs for those people who leave Wall Street for the allure of warmer weather, a slower pace of life and more affordable housing.

So, New York City’s loss, as it turns out, is Charlotte’s gain. Check out the list of the 15 metro areas that are the biggest contributors to Charlotte’s population rise over the years (based on Census Bureau estimates for 2009-13).
