The biggest obstacle to climbing the Active Rain ladder to success

The biggest obstacle to climbing the ladder to success is weeding your way through the crowd at the bottom. I'mStand tall sure you've all heard that before but it is so very true.

Climbing the ladder to Active Rain success is not all that different and it is not hard once you push your way through that crowd hanging around on that first step.

In NH we currently have 513 members with only about 100 of them having posted a blog or two. The rest... the crowd at the bottom have done nothing but perhaps put up a profile. Some haven't even up loaded a picture or for that matter created much of a profile.

Sadly they are missing such a great opportunity, something that can truly help them stand out amongst their competition.

Working the Active Rain ladder to success is not rocket science but more like The Golden Rule...do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It's simple really.

I'm no expert...but here is my take on it, I know you didn't ask but...

Write posts that you would enjoy reading...hint if they bore you...they'll no doubt bore other people!

  • Always remember who your audience is...are you talking to other real estate professionals or the consumer
  • Keep your posts short if at all possible
  • Don't steal other's blog posts
  • Don't steal other peoples photos
  • Try and write at least 2 to 3 posts a week
  • Don't be a link freak...I've been guilty of this, but really nothing turns people off more than a post that is over dressed with links...linking every other word in a post just feels like a walking billboard
  • Don't be a point whore... I'm sure this is controversial but write from your heart and not just to get 200 points

Do you like reading comments on your posts?

  • If so then do unto others as you would have them do unto you...leave them a comment or two. AR is not a one way street.

Even a dog does not poop in their own play ground... Active Rain belongs to all of us ...keep the yard clean and be nice to your fellow bloggers. Think twice if not three times before you hit the "post it" tab...make sure your written words are conveying what you really want them to.

Remember hearing... Don't put all your eggs in one basket? Well it's the same with Blogging...get out there beyond the walls of Active Rain and travel the Blogosphere...start an outside Blog, read outside blogs but remember not everyone plays nice in the sandbox.

So blog smart!

There are some topics that should be off limits or at least proceed with extreme caution if your going to throw it all out there.

  • Don't talk money...like in how much you charge unless your willing to feel the sting
  • Don't throw sand at other agents...don't use names and real life events without disguising the people and the places
  • Don't disparage others...make sure you know your facts if you're going to write negatively
  • Better yet...why don't you look for the positive and write about that instead
  • Do abide by all fair housing, antitrust rules and regulations, real estate commission rules regarding advertising, your company office policy (if they have one) about agents on-line presence

The Golden Rule applies to everything in life and while there is a lot more to blogging than a simple golden rule, like understanding things like SEO and tags ...if you don't have the Golden Rule part down, you'll never get to a point where understanding SEO and tags will make a hill of a difference.

You'll just be hanging around with the crowd at the bottom!

I am a fairly new member to activerain and I love your post.  I am taking my time to write a post worthy of this community.  I have referred several people to the site and already they are not participating.  No picture, no bio you get the point.  I have and will contiue to follow up with my referrals and enjoy this community and all it has to offer!

Thanks,

Monika - This is a wonderful post!  People sign up and you never see them again. There's 4,860 profiles here in Texas and I'm number 14 without working..playing mostly and meeting wonderful people like you and Jay! This is a great site with such valuable resoruces!

I've flagged this one for a feature! Good stuff here!

What a great post.  So many good points covered.

  • Don't be a point whore... I'm sure this is controversial but write from your heart and not just to get 200 point.
  • When people write for points, everyone can see it.  They may be at the top spot but when potiental clients read junk it reflects back on them.  Who wants to be known for junk blogs?

It is a struggle when you start out, but in time we can all find our voice.

Just wrote a long comment and it went wonky then disappeared!  Anyhow I liked your post! It is true that sometimes you feel like a wee minow in the sea...lol....and sometimes you see posts that have 2 or 3 lines and no message, done 10X in a row and you wonder???? What the heck? At any rate I guess you write because you want to write!  You read other blogs because you love to read them!  You comment because it makes a difference........and the rest will surely follow!  :-)

Monika - I think you covered the topic well.  Yes blogging is a two way street.  Like you I just can't figure out why so many fail to utilize the network.

05/05/2008 08:57 PM by Jennifer Fivelsdal, Rhinebeck NY (Keller Williams Realty)

Monika it was a little easier to climb to the top when we first got started than now.  But one thing that has not changed is the number of people who join and then do not do anything.

05/05/2008 08:59 PM by George Souto (McCue Mortgage Co.)

George...When I joined there was something like 92 NH members. I was intimidated for sure. But once I started posting...taking baby steps..I soon saw that it was easy to pass many of them by. Today it is still easy to crack that top 50 in NH...all you need to do is move around the crowd at the bottom and not let them hold you back.

Jennifer...Thanks. I wanted to keep it simple because it really is simple. The Golden Rule...rules.

Barbara...Being a good member benefits us all. It really is a two way street.

    Dave...Thank you!

Mike...Welcome to AR. You'll find this place very addictive and very informative.

    Thank You Debi

Missy...So many silent members on AR. They have no clue what they are missing.

Karen...How very true. Everyone can recognize a Point Whore and you do have to wonder what the consumer thinks when they happen upon it.

    Monika,

Thanks for your words of wisdom.

I've try to post as much as I can as well as make comments. But sometimes I just don't know what to say. Like like my mother use to say; "if you have nothing good to say, don't say anything".

And since I am new to Texas as well as being a Realtor, I'll just keep trying...

Monika,  That was such a nice-tough post.  You hit the good, the bad & the uglies of AR & blogging in such a sweet but honest way.  Very Cool!  BTW I have written posts that were boring & posts that were good.  Good is better!  :-)

    Hi Monika,

I think it's more about having time and keeping up with it. If you lose enthusiasm then you stop blogging. I have invited a few people and they still haven't posted anything. You really have to like blogging not just about keeping up with the industry but unless you have something to write about it could be intimidating to them.

Folks tell me that they can't get anywhere on ActiveRain.  My advice is just don't worry about it.  Set your sites on the person one or two positions ahead and work your way over them, one at a time.

The money is in Localism.  Learn how to write Google friendly Localism posts and wait for the consumers to find you.  That's where the quick money is.

Hi Monika - well looky here - a pretty gold star!

Excellent points here, and too many worry about things that just don't matter after awhile.  Write to your audience, after you decide who that is - that's the best part that people can pay attention to.

I do like the point whore part - way too many just throw up crap, like walls of words, stolen content, walls of listings with no commentary at all, etc.  Who on earth would find that interesting??

Anyway, great post, congrats on the gold star, and I still kinda like that old saying, "Silence is golden".....

This is one of the best posts I've EVER read on ActiveRain. Your "points" are right on target. Some of my major complaints (slient ones) are that some posts are so l-o-n-g. One of the first things a good writer is taught is to "cut...cut...cut..."     Also, your point on "POINTS" ... AWESOME

    Thanks for sharing!  I'm impressed!!!

This is most excellent Monika!  I am mentoring some and they will be seeing this post!

Just like every other form of prospecting, this takes time.  You are building a virtual open house 24/7 with each blog post you write it is like having one more open house that stays open as long as the post exists!!

Yesterday I had a lady who is short selling her home calling me and asking for help.  She was SO nice and appreciative and said "keep writing your blog and I love your website!"  I haven't heard that for so long it was a great thing for her to say to make me even more motivated.

I swear that us bloggers get some of the best customers because of our efforts!

I enjoyed your post.  Active Rain is a great place to go to find out different ideas and how other agents deal with the everyday life of trying to be successful in their practise.  It is just a great place to hang out with folks that have the same struggles.  I have learned quite a bit over the last 3 or 4 months.

    Make It A Great Day!

Morning Monika, your post applies to so many areas of life & biz. Everything you said makes so much sense, especially knowing who our audience is, staying on topic and do unto others.

A lot of people don't get to social part of social networking. Too bad, the rewards far outweigh the efforts.

Monika, Great points. I would like to add a little point about commenting.

Many people do not realize that their comments on others blogs are also showing all over the place! I would advise people to "think" before they comment. I have read many "bashing" comments, that may have been unintended, but there is really no way of knowing that out in Cyberspace.

Your comments reflect you as an individual just as much as your blog post.

The ones that write something of value and are consistent are the ones that it will pay off to. Great tips for newbies...actually, even for everyone.

    Monika,

Many who join AR, whether real estate agents, mortgage loan officers and others, obviously mistakenly believe that once in here, that'll get them all the wonderful benefits of Internet marketing. Well, it isn't so. To gain the benefits requires work, mainly steady blogging and participation.

Monika, I like your background on your profile, I see you are a fellow Lake lover. I am looking for a cool signature too!

Anyway, great post, I agree, it does not take much, but if you do not put anything into it you will not get anything out of it. Kind of like you can't win the lotto if you do not buy a ticket.

I have learned a great deal and with little effort have became number 1 in my city, number 3 in my county and number 174 in the entire state of GA and I am just a lowly APPRAISER, not a Realtor.

Maybe newbies wouldn't have to wade through so many at the bottom if AR deleted accounts not logged into for a year or six months? Why waste the space on people that aren't using the system?

05/06/2008 04:11 PM by Jennifer Kirby (Exit Realty Eden Prairie)

    Hi Monika,

Great post! I'm fairly new to active rain (about 2.5 months or so) and just starting to get the hang of it - and feel the benefits..! IT is really interesting to me that when I look at other realtors in my area that are on AR, hardly any of them seem to use this great tool to their success. Most do have just as you said, a profile, if that, and nothing more. Perhaps these folks, do not yet know how much business could come their way if they started actively blogging..!?

05/06/2008 05:05 PM by Alex Mordas - Tallahassee EcoBroker® (Keller Williams)

Monika.. I like this post, and you are right on.  The one thing I like about reading blogs is when it *HAS* to do with real estate.  I don't care to read about a child gratuating school, or how someones dog died after being in the family for 14 years.  No of this is real estate related.

05/06/2008 06:37 PM by Valerie Osterhoudt (Johnson Real Estate, Inc.)

Oh my goodness... THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

So many awesome comments that I am overwhelmed. While I can't comment individually to you right now...I will be visiting your blogs with the next day or two.

05/06/2008 08:07 PM by Monika McGillicuddy~REALTOR®~ N.H. Real Estate Broker & Trainer (Prudential Verani Realty/Hampstead)

I'm new here, and with a bit of patience and research, I have learned that AR is a great tool.  Yet, when I first came here, I thought it was just another place like MySpace.  I quickly figured out that wasn't true.  I think this may be where we lose a lot of people.  I left shortly after I got here, but something drew me back to see what was happening here.

It would be very helpful if there was a really good "information" link when signing up to explain to people how this place REALLY works, and how it can be of benefit to the professional.  It is my opinion that many who come here and then leave have no idea how to utilize this tool, and they may not even realize that AR is a tool...so they leave.

Something else to consider, a lot of people do not think they have writing skills.  Only after playing on discussion boards for many years did I develop so-so writing skills. Without writing skills, very few will attempt to write blogs.

In conclusion...GREAT INFORMATION Monika, thanks for posting.

Great advice.  I guess it's good to short and sweet.  But then again, I've read blogs that are mini novels that are captivating as a Movie of the Week and I'm still wanting more.  Loved the off limits stuff as well.  Thanks for all the good advice!
