6 Comments on How to hire a Redesigner & why do I need one?
This is the one service that I am still struggling with. - The difference between a redesigner and an interior designer/decorator. Don't they have to be licensed? Aren't we stepping on toes here?
I understand going in and using what the home owner already has and helping them place everything. But actually helping them pick out the tiles and cabinets, and create specific 'styles" - isn't that what an interior designer would and should do?
Obviously I'd love to offer this service, but what are the legal ramifications?
Alyse, the client's choose a contractor of their choice or one that I have actually seen their work or have worked with before. Let's say that there are upgrades they want, I find the best price on what they want.. If they want a collection of samples I get them for them. Not all design firms have "licensed" or educated people working for them but they do have overhead, that's what I am talking about. I always use a general contractor for renovations and work with them. I know how to achieve the "look" and have the experience to back it up. But I wouldn't have if I didn't try, so you should see if that is an area you want to pursue. You need to try and discover your potential, I am sure you have the desire. Interior Designers are great but not all designers are schooled or are created equal just like redesigners some are better than others, check out Top Design on Bravo most have no background in interior design per se' they are just talented. You have to draft a contract to state what if any areas you are liable for, that's the protection and the authority. Priniciples of design are the same for every discipline: form, texture, line and color.
Alyse, you may have a specialty service to offer, maybe you are fantastic at great room makeovers or a zen bath master offer only what you are comfortable with at first then add to it. I hope this helps, my best advice is to really listen to the client and ask questions. That is my ultimate purpose to make them happy and know they got as much as they could working with their budget.
The best of luck to you! Off to meet my new clients', I am so excited, can't wait. I'll let you know what happens.
Joni - you go girl! You confidence is exuding all over the rain forest. I am happy that you are pursuing your passion for decorating. It is so much fun and unlimited. Interior decorating and interior design are very different. Your work is as good as your workrooms and subsn and your talents will take you whereever you want to go.
Take lots of pictures!
Sheron, thank you and I need to stand corrected, the contractor on this redesign project will re-route plumbing and electrical as well as handle the installation and construction. My job will be to help the client select their items that will go in the kitchen. Waiting for the contractor one of 2 to contact them so I can meet with him. They will also be taking down a wall and moving everything around. The way they talk it will be a transition between traditional and contempory styles. BTW, on the same day these clients called I received a phone call from a lady that is downsizing to a smaller home and needs lots of help with color, etc. So, I am anxious to get started.
I so appreciate your support, Sheron, you truly got me motivated, it's like Shell sharing the "Secret", everyone in the Rain, Stages it Forward----what a great philosophy.
