paddle searcy ar historic relic from Othel Jones

paddle from past Searcy AR schools

Daughter has found a new love.......planning for an estate sale.  She is working on the vast collection of works from a retired Searcy AR teacher, Mr. Othel Jones, who apparently loved finding and keeping things.  This is one of the treasures (certainly one of a kind) that has been discovered.

Since Daughter attended schools in Searcy she was definitely interested in this item.  It was evidently used gently by a loving teacher who then asked the kid if he/she would like to sign the paddle.  She did point out that one kid signed Kilroy which may have gained him another lick.  You can turn this paddle in different directions under different lighting and see more and more names.  I am going to list a few that I think I can read.  Some are carved, some are scratched, some are penciled and if you were ever paddled by this teacher, we'd love to hear your comments!

Steve England, Randy Cooper, Brad Latey, Terry Hampton, Kristi Matejko, JLWays, Larry Haskins, Deane Mason, Mike Langford, Steve East and one says With Love Kathi.

There are SO many others.  You could study this paddle for hours!  What a great conversation piece it would be in your home!  Daugher is Valerie Canepa if you want more information.

I see a Kristi, but not my last name. I never had a Jones for a teacher, and I never got paddled at school, because I knew I get it worse at home! But I always got checks under 'talks too much', lol.😂Omg, I see it now! Forgery! I certainly didn't print that neatly back then! Nor would I have signed IF I had gotten paddled! Or maybe I blocked it out of my memory, lol!!

Kristi, after the name Kristi I saw Matejko but that may not be the only Kristi on that board.  Thanks for commenting.

What an amazing thing that paddle is.  We didn't have spanking at school when I went.  Even though I am from an era, that did experience paddling in some areas of the country!

I remember the teacher would have the student lean over his desk, in front of the class, and generally gave them 3 good whacks, not gentle whacks. This seemed to always happen once a year and the boy was good the rest of the year. Never saw a girl get whacked. These people were not mentally hurt at all! Probably should be used on some of todays kids (or their parents)

At least Val's name isn't on this paddle, LOL. Now, where's the ruler used to whack the knuckles?

Is Mr Jones still living? He was my teacher, and I loved him! He gave me the nick name of "motor mouth".

I was paddled in the fifth grade by Mr. Jones. I'm 48 now and still remember him like it was yesterday. He was a great teacher!!

Myrl, paddling is still legal in Arkansas.

Karon, this paddle is very light and would probably be more embarrassing than anything else.

Elizabeth, Val's name thankfully is not on the paddle!

Debbie, I am not sure about his condition but I believe he is still alive.  His heirs have liquidated his estate.

Terry, is your name on the paddle?  Thanks for the great comment about him.

The paddle has been purchased!  One of the names on the paddle, a hugely successful business man now, has bought it!  It will look impressive hanging on the wall of his home!

It was not so gentle in my day and hopefully will be banned in this country. As a piece of history it is ok.

No. It smarted quite. I remember it. I dont remember being embarrassed, but maybe that was my problem... It seems that three whacks was some kind of standard. I think Mr Mallet handled it if more than three. If you got more than three you signed it?
I dont recall sighing anything, but I did get many, many.... Jones, Mallet, and a Mr. Wildman.

Wildcatter, you need to identify yourself!  Sounds as if you have lots of experience in the Searcy area schools, including Harding and the public schools.  Sounds as if you'd make a good Searcy Sleuth!  Thanks for visiting my blog.

"I dont recall signing anything"

Now I am being embarrassed. Maybe that is how it works. "Delayed response" - period of time during which the response to a second stimulus is significantly slowed because a first stimulus is still being processed.

Looking closer I do see my name, and yes I am too embarrassed to admit it....but I will work through this....with your help!

Thank you.

Wildcatter, no need to be embarrassed.  One guy whose name is on that paddle bought it.  Steve England paid $100 for the paddle!  He thinks the paddle might have made him a better person through the years and he is a very successful business person now.
