The Batiquitos Lagoon is a treasure, and efforts to preserve it are so important and appreciated by area residents. The Batiquitos Lagoon is in the Aviara area, bordering Encinitas, and is a wildlife nature preserve with miles of trails to enjoy along the lagoon with great bird watching. Fishing, swimming and boating are not allowed so the opportunity to get out on this lagoon in a kayak and help with a clean-up is a unique opportunity.
The Batiquitos Lagoon Kayak Cleanup is a way to help maintain this magnificent lagoon and rid the area and lagoon of trash, which seems to run the gamut from tires, fishing lines and bottles to plastic bottle holders, golf course markers (from the adjacent Aviara Golf Course) and a variety of balls.
Kayakers can bring their own kayaks but REI will supply kayaks (sorry, only single kayaks will be available) and safety gear for the clean-up. You can still register and buy tickets online for Saturday or Sunday but slots are filling up quickly (2-hour slots at $60 per person, 12 years of age or older, and is tax deductible). You can expect to sign the 2 waivers to participate. Open at 6:30 am with 4 launches at the south end of the lagoon by Exit 44 for La Costa Avenue off the I-5 freeway, at 7:30, 9:30, 11:30 and 1:30.
We are so fortunate to have the Batiquitos Lagoon, and the Batiquitos Foundation whose volunteers work so hard during the year to help keep the trails and area clean and safe. And this special once-a-year event where a limited number of people can boat on the lagoon is a special event indeed.
