Albino Luciani was born in Forno di Canale, Italy back in 1912 to Giovanni and Bortola. At the tender age of ten he listened to a Capuchin friar preaching on the Lenten sermons. It was then he approached his father asking him for permission to become a priest. His father agreed and said to him: “I hope tht when you become a priest you will be on the side of the workers, for Christ Himself would have been on their side”. His father’s words stayed with him throughout his life.
He entered the minor seminary of Feltre in 1923 and on to the major seminary of Belluno. He was Ordained a priest in 1935, serving as a curate in his native Forno de Canle before becoming a professor and vice-rector. His thesis on the origin of the human soul, earned him his doctorate and magna cum lude in 1947. From 1962 to 1965 he participated in all the sessions of the Second Vatican Council. I can go on and on with his accomplishments however, in this forum we will cut to the chase. In 1978 something happened to Albino however, you may know him better as Pope John Paul I. That’s right he was Pope serving for only 33 days before his untimely death. I remember hearing about this in the news, did you? In 2003 he was declared a Servant of God by then Pope John Paul II, the first step on the road to sainthood. There is a museum in Canale d’Agordo made and named in his honor, if you are ever in the area take time and go there, I’m sure you will like it. I’ll get there one of these days and take a look
