Google announces a Mobile first search engine policy

It seems like the world is moving towards tablets and phones and this is where Google is going to reward sites that comply.  Though, being the dinosaur I am, I feel that many people miss an awful lot by doing their searches on their mobile devices.

I subscribe to Wordtracker because the articles are authoritative and always worth reading. So imagine my surprise when I read just now that Google will have a mobile first search engine index and de-emphasize a desktop first system. The article ways this is a few months away but mobile compatibility is up to 85% in searches so the ascendancy is already there. Since the iPhone came out I felt like it was becoming an app world so doing YouTube videos seemed instinctively the right way to go because the public just like with Facebook could go effortlessly to the app in a direct fashion. The question remains, how will this affect long form advertising like 1000 word blogs? I am no genius on this and don't have an immediate and correct insight to it but I would love to here your comments on whether this is the beginning of the end of blogging, ot does it mean that blogging which has lost it's dominant position in putting out our message will stay relevant. When change comes that seems as dramatic as this, one has to question is this the end of business as usual.

To read the post, which after all is a blog post, you can access it here. I also recommend subscribing to Wordtracker as well as Copyblogger if you haven't already. I await the verdict.

I'm really interested to see where this goes for the future of search and for the future of the effectiveness of phones.

Gabe Sanders - I've read this in other places, so it is coming.  You'd think that Google would be able to tell what types of devices you are searching on and have two rankings on for mobile and one for laptop.  As someone who has older eyes, I prefer to search on the larger screens, so I'm not giving up my laptop anytime soon! : )  A great choice for a re-blog!

Top of the morning Gabe.  The importance of mobil friendly web pages were brought out over a year ago with Google actually having a page letting you know if yours was OK.  Seems they have stepped the importance UP beyond that.  Have seen quite a few posts on the subject lately.  Make it a great day.  mark

Like you, I am more of a dinosaur. But the reality is tablets and smart phones are the wave of the future.  The name smart-phone implies there is a dumb-phone.
