Trick-or-treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat!
A big shout out to the homeowners of Haynes Manor/Peachtree Battle -- one of Buckhead's most affluent neighborhoods -- for turning the neighborhood into a welcoming trick-or-treat paradise for kids. Halloween in this affluent neighborhood drew hundreds of pint-sized revelers as soon as the sun went down.
The host families who handed out the treats primarily live on Peachtree Battle Avenue and Dellwood Drive. These residents graciously performed this community service with smiles, and lots of compliments for the costume creativity shown by the little ghouls and gobblins.
The homeowners appeared to get as big a kick out of the festivities as the kids. Some worried about having too much candy and leftovers. Others worried about not having enough candy and running out before all of the little trick-or-treaters got their fill of very generous helpings of popular sugary selections. To them, all the effort was more than worth it to see all the fantastic costumes and big smiles on the young faces.
Driving the biggest candy train was Paul Hagedorn, the heir to the Scotts Miracle-Gro empire.
Hagedorn annually opens his grounds to neighborhood kids (and many kids NOT from the neighborhood) for an international candy festival and evening of fun -- complete with music, bouncy houses, games, photo keepsakes, a flying saucer ride and enough candy to satisfy several hundred sweet toothes.
This year, he charged $15 per person for entry into his magical kingdom, but he donates the proceeds to charity. This Halloween extravaganza has grown over the past 5 years. The price has steadily increased from 'FREE' to '$15' over the years, but that didn't deter anyone. The once moderate number of attendees is now bursting at the seams as the word spreads wider each year.
I wish some of the revelers would leave their dogs at home, but otherwise it is definitely a memorable way to party on Halloween. As my 9-year-old (who has been to the festivities 5 years in a row) says, "It never gets old. I can hardly wait 'til next year".
This year, my rock star started out as Prince. By the end of the evening he was Mick Jagger. What do you think?
When they like your costume, you get extra treats and he came home with his bag full. Amongst the stash were three Snickers, four Butterfingers and two Almond Joys. Ahh, Heaven!
Trick or treat, smell my feet, I got something good to eat!
